Algonquin College announces National Indigenous Peoples Day activities
Posted on Thursday, June 18th, 2026
June 19, 2026, Ottawa, ON— In advance of June 21, Algonquin College is proud to host a College community event in recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day on Friday, June 19, 2026, honouring the histories, cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. The event reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and its responsibility to ensure Indigenous knowledge and culture remain integral to campus life.
Algonquin College will mark this important day with an in‑person Medicine Shield Workshop facilitated by Marc Forgette of Makatew. The hands-on session introduces the medicine shield as a symbolic teaching tool focused on protection, identity and balance, not as a weapon or ceremonial object. Participants will explore how symbols such as colours, directions, animals and natural elements have long been used to share teachings and stories across generations.
“The importance of Indigenous Peoples Day is that it gives us an opportunity to reflect and acknowledge our country’s complex history and to celebrate the strength and beauty of Indigenous cultures and languages, said Anita Tenasco, Director of Indigenous Initiatives, Algonquin College. “Let’s honour the contributions that Indigenous peoples are making to Canadian society.”
Algonquin College continues to guide the institution’s efforts to embed Indigenous worldviews, support Indigenous learners and create spaces that honour Indigenous presence. This National Indigenous Peoples Day event is one of many initiatives that demonstrate the College’s commitment to meaningful, ongoing action.
Registration details and event information are available through the College’s event listing.
