Algonquin College’s first graduating cohorts from accredited engineering program receive Iron Rings

July 27, 2026, Ottawa, Ont – The first graduating cohorts from Algonquin College’s newly accredited engineering degree program marked a significant milestone this past weekend as they participated in the Calling of an Engineer Ceremony (also known as the Iron Ring Ceremony), joining generations of Canadian engineers who have obligated themselves to the profession’s highest standards of ethics, responsibility and public service.
The ceremony followed the program’s accreditation, announced in October 2025 and marked the first time Algonquin College graduates from the accredited program participated in this longstanding Canadian tradition.
As part of the ceremony, graduates received an Iron Ring, worn on the pinky finger of the working hand. As the ring scratches on their table as engineers work, it serves as a constant reminder to approach every decision with care, diligence and humility.
“Receiving an Iron Ring is one of the defining moments in an engineer’s career. It represents a commitment to apply technical knowledge with integrity, humility and unwavering responsibility to the public.” said Claude Brulé, President and CEO of Algonquin College, who attended and participated in the ceremony. “Seeing the first graduates from Algonquin College’s accredited engineering program reach this milestone is a proud moment for our graduates, our faculty and our College and reflects the quality of engineering education we have built.”
“The Iron Ring ceremony represents the culmination of years of hard work, determination and perseverance for these graduates,” said Sandra Brancatelli, Dean of the School of Advanced Technology. “They have all developed the knowledge, skills and judgment. Today, they obligated themselves to apply it with the highest standards of ethics, quality and professionalism. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and confident they will make meaningful contributions to their profession, their communities and the industries they will help shape.”
Accreditation by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board affirms that the program meets nationally recognized standards and provides graduates with a pathway toward professional engineering licensure in Canada.
