Algonquin College receives research grant to support survivors of intimate partner violence

OTTAWA (Dec. 18, 2023) – Algonquin College has received a $358,508 grant to further collaborative research supporting survivors of intimate partner violence. As part of the College and Community Innovation (CCI) program grants issued by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), this funding will strengthen collaborative research between Canadian colleges and partners from the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

“We are pleased to announce the launch of our exciting new project, Applying Concussion Recovery Technology to Support Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence, at Algonquin College,” said Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Algonquin College. “This project not only offers invaluable experiential learning opportunities for our students but also addresses a critical community need. We extend our gratitude to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research grant for recognizing and supporting the significance of this initiative.”

Algonquin College hosts student research showcase

OTTAWA (Dec. 4, 2023) – The Office of Applied Research at Algonquin College is hosting the RE/ACTION In-Class Projects Showcase on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This edition of RE/ACTION has a special focus on public health, with over 50 student teams displaying projects on topics ranging from improving health care in Indigenous communities, increasing public awareness on the benefits of influenza immunization, drafting non-stigmatizing terminology in medical and nursing documentation related to substance use health, and creating activities for residents at The Oaks, a managed alcohol program in Ottawa. Algonquin College partners with CityStudio Ottawa, joining University of Ottawa, City of Ottawa

OTTAWA (Nov. 21, 2023) – Algonquin College has entered into a partnership contract with CityStudio Ottawa, a globally-recognized framework for students to collaborate on civic engagement through experiential learning with faculty, city administration and community partners. Through its community relationships, CityStudio Ottawa provides a framework for knowledge exchange as students cross-collaborate on real-world projects that have a direct impact on the health and wellbeing of residents within the Ottawa region.

“By joining CityStudio Ottawa, Algonquin College is demonstrating our commitment to experiential learning with an emerging research focus on community engaged learning,” said Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Experiential Learning and Innovation. “The CityStudio partnership is the first step in advancing our strategic vision for increased applied research focused on community-based research. Student research showcase coming to Algonquin College

OTTAWA (Aug. 2, 2023) – The Office of Applied Research at Algonquin College is hosting an In-Class Projects Showcase on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At the event, students will exhibit forward-looking research and technology projects produced in collaboration with industry, institutional and community partners, providing a glimpse into the future of technology and the current state of innovation. Ranging from robotics to artificial intelligence, fundraising to civic engagement, the projects students work on are incredibly diverse.

Judges from local employer partners, including Natural Resources Canada, Ingenium and the Kanata North Business Association will be in attendance to discuss project details with the student-led teams.

RE/ACTION: Virtual Applied Research Showcase on Aug. 12

OTTAWA (Aug. 10, 2022) — The Algonquin College Office of Applied Research will host its RE/ACTION Applied Research Showcase on Friday, Aug. 12, 2022.

The event highlights innovations in applied research undertaken by students, including an online portal documenting the crimes against the Yazidi people, personal security app technology, multiple initiatives to increase food sovereignty for struggling students and many other exciting projects.

RE/ACTION: Virtual Applied Research Showcase on April 8

OTTAWA (April 6, 2022) – The Office of Applied Research, Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Algonquin College is hosting its RE/ACTION: Virtual Applied Research Showcase on Friday, April 8, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

At the event, Algonquin College students exhibit forward-looking research and technology projects produced in collaboration with industry, institutional and community partners, providing a glimpse into the future of technology and the current state of innovation. Ranging from robotics to web design, building science to social innovation, and anything in between, the projects students work on are incredibly diverse.

At the showcase, the five most promising projects, selected from over 40 submissions, are presented by their teams to a panel of industry professionals during a live Zoom event. The judges ask the teams questions about their projects before deciding on winners. You’re invited to watch the finalists compete, and browse the entire catalogue of projects.

From a joint effort with CHEO on a web application that connects parents of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit patients to hospital research studies, to an online tool that allows you to calculate home renovation costs before you hire a contractor, these projects offer a glimpse of the future.

Algonquin College research collaboration with CHEO receives $91,000 from Innovation Fund

April 9, 2018 (OTTAWA) —An innovative applied research collaboration to bring medical information closer to patients has received $91,000.

This new investment will accelerate an ongoing research collaboration between the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Algonquin College.

The new funding was awarded by the Children’s Hospital Academic Medical Organization Innovation Fund competition through the Innovation Fund provincial oversight committee.

The funding (over two years) supports a joint project called Insight Scope, a crowdsourcing software platform that aims to significantly accelerate the synthesis and translation of medical evidence to the bedside.

Algonquin College and Siemens Canada partner on Mechatronics and Dual-Education programs

The next chapter in the multi-faceted partnership between Algonquin College and Siemens Canada was made official today as the organizations announced a new collaboration aimed at addressing the technical skills gap in Canada and accelerating implementation of Industrie 4.0 advanced manufacturing concepts. Algonquin students will soon have access to two new advanced skills programs to further prepare them for the workplace of the future; the Siemens Mechatronics Systems certification and the Dual-Education enhanced co-op program, both to be offered through the Siemens Canada Engineering and Technology Academy (SCETA).

Algonquin College and The Ottawa Hospital form new partnership

OTTAWA — Algonquin College and The Ottawa Hospital are embarking on a unique partnership in health research, innovation and training. The College has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hospital’s research institute to “encourage and facilitate the development of mutually beneficial linkages” in areas such as digital health, clinical trials and biotherapeutics manufacturing.
