What to expect from Student Self-Enrolment

The new Student Information System (SIS), Thesis SM, will completely change the way learners register for courses. Introducing: Student Self-Enrolment! This means that learners will have full freedom and flexibility to choose their courses each term. This new process will consist of two steps: Pre-enrolment and Re-enrolment. We will delve into what these two new terms mean and how they work.

Not only is this a big change for our learners, but it’s also a big change for employees. The Registrar’s Office (RO) will still be involved in Student Self-Enrolment, just not in the same way. Instead of completing registration for learners and sending out finalized timetables, the RO will instead be there to support learners and troubleshoot when necessary.

Below is a breakdown of the new Student Self-Enrolment process.

Pre-enrolment

Pre-enrolment is when learners reserve their courses. This step in the process will only be available to returning learners, meaning that new learners will jump right to Re-enrolment. Continuing Education learners will also not need to complete this step. During this time, returning learners will also be able to conditionally register themselves in courses where they have not completed the pre-requisites and do not have a final grade. This step will occur prior to the end of a term.

Re-enrolment

Re-enrolment is when all learners—both new and returning—register for their courses during an active registration period. This step will occur and be finalized once grades have been processed.

Summary of changes

To summarize the new Student Self-Enrolment process, below are the key highlights to Pre-enrolment and Re-enrolment:

  • Learners will complete registration instead of the RO.
  • Pre-enrolment: Returning learners will reserve their courses (including conditionally register) prior to the end of a term.
  • Re-enrolment: All learners register for their courses once grades have been processed.

Student Self-Enrolment will not only be a huge benefit for learners, but for employees as well. This new process will streamline the overall process and allow better alignment for everyone involved.

As for learners, they will have complete agency over creating their educational journey. Not only will this give them more flexibility as they pick their courses, but it will give them the confidence they need from start to finish!
