What’s Changing with Curriculum? Here’s what you need to know

There are many changes coming with the implementation of the new Student Information System (SIS), Thesis SM. There are several big changes, such as Student Self-Enrolment or Domestic on Demand, but that’s not all. There are a number of significant changes happening in Academics; more specifically, Curriculum. For a bit of extra context, we’ve already covered several Curriculum topics at past Showcase events, like Program Curriculum Setup and the Curriculum Stabilization Project!

Now, let’s go over all the big changes the new SIS is bringing to Curriculum.

Academic Program Management

What is currently known as Program Narrative will be called Program Information in Thesis SM. Check out the new Curriculum terminology to learn more about the lingo.

Those who can modify Curriculum records will have access to College Eligibility and Program Eligibility fields. This process will still require manual entry, which will be done in the Registrar’s Office (RO).

Outside of Thesis SM, emails will be sent to the relevant people to ensure Academic Programs are completed and published accordingly.

Module Blocks

Module Blocks are a new feature that support Student Self-Enrolment, and they enable us to assess fees appropriately by level.

This feature also simplifies course selection, keeps learners on track with program requirements, streamlines enrolment, and helps maintain cohort consistency across academic terms.

Module Blocks will be created for each Program, Level, Delivery Mode, and Campus. For example, the Police Foundations program is available at AC Online, Pembroke, and Ottawa. Module Blocks would be available for each level at each campus. In this case, Ottawa would have 4 Module Blocks, Pembroke would have 3, and AC Online would have 4, for a total of 11 Module Blocks.

Program Curriculum

The overall process for creating Program Curriculum remains mostly unchanged. However, the term Program Curriculum will be replacing Program of Study.

This process is what will feed the Credential Audit tool. This means that what a learner sees on the portal will come directly from the Program Curriculum. The type of information listed includes level breakdown and course requirements. For example, a learner may require 6 core courses and 1 elective course.

Course Master

In Thesis SM, Course Masters can be created to facilitate the organization of course information. The Course Master is an information record for courses delivered at Algonquin College. Some examples of information include Course ID, description, credit hours, and requisites.

Curriculum covers a wide range of processes and affects a number of individuals. We hope that by outlining the big changes will help you feel better equipped to using the new SIS!
