Residence Community Living Standards (RCLS)
As a member of the Residence Community, respect and accountability serves as the foundation for a safe and comfortable space. The Residence Community Living Standards (RCLS) encourages you to take responsibility for your actions to ensure everyone in Residence has a safe and enjoyable experience.
We have outlined additional specific information about some of our RCLS policies below.
Alcohol & Container Sizes
If you are 19 years of age or older then you are welcome to have and consume alcohol in your suite.
Residence is substance free until September 9, 2025.
Your alcohol and their containers must be equal to or less than:
- 40% alcohol concentration (by volume),
- 355ml for beer, malt liquor, cider, coolers, and pre-mixed cocktails,
- 750ml of any type of alcohol other than beer such as wine, liquor, or cocktail mixes,
- 12 cans per case of alcohol.
Be sure to always avoid the following, which are prohibited:
- Large volume “common source” alcohol containers like tallboys, King cans, Quart Bottles, Kegs, mini kegs, 40ozs, 60ozs, and Texas Mickeys,
- Single serving glass containers (e.g., beer bottles),
- Pre-mixed caffeinated alcohol beverages and mixing alcohol with caffeinated energy drinks,
- Having an open alcohol container and consuming alcohol anywhere outside of your suite.
Building Care
We require all residence suites (including bedrooms and bathrooms) to meet certain minimum standards of cleanliness. Staff schedule midterm inspections of all suites every term.
Please ensure you keep your residence suite clean enough that the facilities are not damaged via neglect or damage (e.g., mould, odours that stick to the wallpaper, etc.),
As well, you should ensure that odours do not have a negative impact on your roommate, staff who may enter your suite (e.g., maintenance staff), or the surrounding community.
If academic stress, mental health challenges, or another concern are making keeping up on cleaning difficult, please let your Residence Life Coordinator know. We will be happy to support and you can rest assured we won’t judge you. We’re here to help!
Fire Safety
When you are cooking in your suite kitchenette or a communal kitchen, you must stay with your food at all times. Leaving your food unattended creates a safety risk for the entire building.
Quiet & Consideration Hours
Quiet Hours exist to create an environment that prioritizes studying and sleeping at night.
During these hours, you should avoid making noise that can be heard outside of your suite and, if requested by your roommate, outside of your bedroom:
- Sunday-Thursday nights from 11pm-8am, and
- Friday-Saturday nights from 1am-8am.
Consideration Hours are in effect 24/7/365. At all times when living in residence, you should be mindful of your roommate, surrounding neighbours, and the residence building as a whole. Be sure to keep noise to a reasonable level and respect other residents if they ask you to lower the noise.
If you want to hangout with friends and be a bit more lively check out our residence events calendar plus other events on-campus through Student Support Services and the Students’ Association.
Safety & Security
Please always use the main entrance connected to the front lobby for coming and going to residence. All other doors in and out of the building are for emergency use only (e.g., during a fire alarm).
Ensure you always keep doors fully closed, including suite doors. Propped doors cause significant security risk and can even be a major fire safety threat. The exception is doors inside your suite (e.g., bedrooms, bathroom).
Smoke-Free Campus
Algonquin College is a smoke-free campus and you can learn more on the Clean Air website.
Suite Capacity
You can have up to six people in your suite at one time. The two people who live there plus two guests for each of you!
Be sure you sign-in your guests at the front desk before they enter the building and remember that you are responsible for your guests at all times.
