Learn both theory and practical skills

Students in the Biotechnology-Advanced program at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Canada are on the cutting edge of technology and science as they explore the ways biotechnology is improving quality of life through breakthroughs in health care, pharmaceutical, agriculture, industrial and environmental fields. In addition to theory, students receive extensive hands-on training in genetic transformations, plant tissue culture, protein chemistry, HPLC, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, PCR and Q-PCR. They also receive training in basic animal handling, injection procedures and animal husbandry.

Partner with local industry on group projects

This program offers students unique opportunities to partner with local industry during their third year. Through the “Innovations in Research and Development” and the “Project Incubation” courses, students work in small groups on Applied Research Projects, where they plan, execute, and present collaborative research projects generated by industry, the department faculty, or the student.

Optional Co-op

With department approval, students complete an optional paid full-time work term during the Spring/Summer months. Students have the opportunity to complete two co-op terms. Co-op terms are between Level 04 and Level 05, and at the end of Level 06.

Students applying for the Cooperative Education option of their program of study must meet all of the following criteria:

  • is still registered in the Co-op option of a program;
  • has completed all courses that precede the work term on the program of studies, including the Co-op preparatory course;
  • has maintained the required Program Cumulative GPA of 2.70 (B – ) prior to the work term;
  • is eligible to work in Canada.
