Community ContactThese strategies have been particularly popular at Algonquin College. The goal of these initiatives is to improve the link to the community, liaise with potential employers or allow the students to receive feedback and advice from practicing professionals.
Orientation - Half day Visits to Program-specific VenuesHospitality and Tourism, Algonquin College 04/05 and 05/06 QAF funded project. Field trip goal was to provide a better link between occupation, work environment and program of choice. Bus tour to this and other local professional libraries followed by pizza lunch used to promote dialogue with professionals in the field and interaction among first year students. Behind the Scenes Museum TourApplied Museum Studies, Faculty of Health, Public Safety and Community Studies, Algonquin College 05/06 QAF funded project. This field trip is the first time that some of the Museum Studies students have seen a museum behind the scenes. It helps them to get the full story of the work involved. Workshop with a guest speaker from Robert Half (an employment agency specializing in high technology) and selected graduates to report back about their employment search successes to students in first and second year. During the second week of classes, a panel comprised of RNs, GAS graduates now in BSc in Nursing at Ottawa U. and faculty of GAS present and take questions from the students. Career paths in degree and practical nursing are clarified. Radio professionals spend half a day with second year students to give one-on-one feedback on their performance. Students in this program sometimes have difficulty with specific programming courses (in this case, web authoring languages). To provide remediation and encouragement, a recognized industry practitioner who works in the subject matter is invited to the school to provide a verbal assessment of the student’s skills and individual attention. This event focuses on the employment prospects for students who are not ready to apply for police work as such. Employers in the enforcement/security field(non-policing employers showcase their organizations.
