Algonquin College has been recognized as the Education winner at the Save on Energy 2025 Energy Management Excellence Awards. The College’s Facilities Management team was presented the award at a ceremony September 17.
This award highlights the College’s leadership in energy efficiency and sustainability. In 2024, we reduced overall electricity consumption, achieved 112 kW of demand savings, and saved 42,200 GJ of natural gas.
Following the completion of the College’s Master Campus Development Plan, Facilities Management will be updating the supporting Energy and Emissions, Water and Transportation strategies over the coming years. The Algonquin College 2024 Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan identifies the extensive sustainability and energy savings initiatives undertaken by the College.
Algonquin College has already surpassed its 2030 energy intensity goal and is currently developing a carbon roadmap to meet its greenhouse gas and energy use goals.
“I am extremely impressed with the commitment of the whole Facilities Management team to operate our campus facilities efficiently and effectively,” said Ryan Southwood, Executive Director of Facilities Management.
“Our Building Systems Analyst, Graham Timperon, coordinates this work by securing industry partner incentives to offset the additional capital cost of more energy-efficient systems. Implementation is carried out by the Facilities Operations, Maintenance and Engineering Services, and Facilities Development teams in line with our capital plan priorities, resulting in higher-quality campus facilities.”
To ensure the long-term success of these initiatives, the College has reinvested more than $18 million in campus-wide energy efficiency projects, financed through the savings themselves. These efforts support our ambitious target of $1.1 million in annual operating cost reductions across electricity, natural gas, and water usage.
