Threads of identity

On Thursday, March 12, learners visited the Mamidosewin Centre Soaring Circle Sewing Lab to learn to make a ribbon skirt.
A traditional Indigenous ribbon skirt is a long, often aline garment decorated with horizontal rows of colorful ribbons. It is worn by many Indigenous women across Turtle Island and carries deep cultural, spiritual and personal significance.
Throughout March, learners can attend ribbon skirt workshops. Students can select from an assortment of fabrics and ribbons, and with the assistance of Elder Jenny Tenasco, learn to sew a skirt that they can wear at the upcoming Round Dance on March 27.
The Round Dance & Vendor Fair takes place March 27 from 3 p.m. — midnight in the ARC Gym. If you wish to volunteer, please email mamidosewin@algonquincollege.com.
