October is Occupational Therapy Month

OTA/PTA student standing outsideOctober is Occupational Therapy Month. At Algonquin College, we proudly offer the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program. Occupational Therapist Assistants play a vital role in supporting the assessment, planning and implementation of therapeutic care across a variety of healthcare environments. The versatile set of skills, learned and applied throughout our program at Algonquin College, are becoming increasingly valuable as the demand for both healthcare and rehabilitation services continue to grow.

Meet Elspeth Jordan, an Algonquin College student studying in the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program. Read about Elspeth’s experience in the program:

AC: What did you enjoy the most about your time in the OTA PTA program?

EJ: I really enjoyed collaborating with my classmates. Whether we were working on group projects, helping each other study, or practicing our hands on skills in the lab, I learned so much from them.

AC: How did the clinical placements in the program help to shape your career goals?

EJ: One of the most helpful things about our placements was the variety of experiences available. I was able to work with people of all ages, in a hospital, and in a clinic. Gaining experience in different settings really helped me understand my goals and my place in this field.

AC: What would you say to a clinician who is thinking about taking on an OTA PTA student?

EJ: If you are someone who likes to build connections with people and help them reach their goals, the OTA PTA program is a great fit. It’s so rewarding to be part of a team that helps people work towards their full potential.

AC: Do you have any suggestions for future OTA PTA students?

EJ: Never be afraid to ask questions. Our professors are extremely knowledgeable, but more than that, they care deeply about their students and their success. And if you’re wondering about something, you’re probably not the only one!
