AC’s new Library offers an ‘energizing’ space for learners

Right now, Algonquin College’s new Library looks like anything but a library, what with dangling wires, bare concrete, the roar of machinery, and lots of busy men and women in hard hats.

But not too many weeks from now – six weeks, in fact – the DARE District facility will be a realm of studious serenity, a high-ceilinged, sun-lit space where learners (along with faculty and employees) can enjoy high-tech learning aids, acres of study space, tutoring, and much more. Indeed, College students will have two full floors of services available to them, some of which will be available 24/7.

“I think everybody, students, staff, and faculty, can look forward to this great new space,” says Library Manager Tammy Thornton. “The building is really modern and fresh with a lot of natural light. The whole atmosphere and emphasis on learning and discovery is going to be really energizing.”

Here’s a glimpse at some of what everyone will discover following the DARE District grand opening slated for May 3:

  • A 3rd floor with seating for more than 500 in various study space modes – collaborative, quiet and silent – along with plenty of computers, laptops and printing services;
  • A “front desk” and a “research desk” with staff using wireless headsets to provide “quick and efficient services”
  • The main Library collection will hold about 35,000 books, as well as a large digital collection. Indeed, the online collection represents about 70 per cent of the full collection.
  • The Student Learning Centre will be located on the second floor of the new centre, offering a variety of services, including, among other items:
  • 24/7 access to Peer Tutoring space;
  • A Digital Literacy Lab will offer numerous literacy workshops to students and staff;
  • Another area in the Student Learning Centre will offer support in writing, English language learning, as well as help in math and computer skills, among other services;
  • A Presentation Studio that will provide students with the technical tools – including multimedia equipment and a moveable green wall – and space to practice and record course presentations.

Some facilities will be open day and night, seven days a week, including seating arrangements in the 3rd floor “learning space.” As well, the 2nd floor Peer Tutoring space will be open 24/7.

Of course, in the interests of student safety, security cameras will be located throughout the Library.

All in all, says Thornton, “the Library and Student Learning Centre are committed to providing students with the services they need to be successful in their studies.”
