Algonquin College hosts federal funding announcement

On Thursday, Feb. 29, Claude Brulé, President and CEO, Algonquin CollegeClaude Brule with two federal ministers and guests in the Mamidosewin centre for a funding announcement welcomed Randy Boissonnault, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages, to announce funding to assist with post-secondary education for Indigenous youth. The announcement included six million dollars for Indspire for their Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries, Scholarships and Awards program. This funding, provided through the Supports for Student Learning Program, will allow Indspire to offer scholarships and bursaries to 2,400 Indigenous students across Canada so they can pursue post-secondary training.

Speaking at the Mamidosewin Centre, Boissonnault was joined by Anita Vandenbeld, Member of Parliament for Ottawa West – Nepean, who emceed the event.

“We are also grateful today for this announcement, as Indspire funding has directly benefitted and supported many Indigenous learners here at Algonquin College, and we look forward to that valued relationship continuing thanks to today’s financial commitment,” said President Brulé.  

Attendees included Anita Tenasco, Director, Indigenous Initiatives, Algonquin College, Mike DeGagné, President & CEO of Indspire, and Priscilla Kuksuk, a student at Algonquin College studying Child and Youth Care.

Indspire is an Indigenous national charity that invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada.
