Algonquin College marks Campus Sustainability Month

October marks Campus Sustainability Month, an opportunity to recognize the work being done across post-secondary institutions to create more sustainable campuses and communities.

At Algonquin College, sustainability is reflected in both day-to-day operations and long-term planning. Led by Facilities Management, current initiatives include LED lighting upgrades, hybrid heat pump retrofits, solar photovoltaic integration on our campus rooftops, building automation optimization and major infrastructure projects designed to improve energy efficiency and climate resilience.

The Ottawa Campus developed a Carbon Roadmap across all buildings on the campus. This tool allows the strategic planning team to prioritize projects that meet the College’s carbon reduction goals while also optimizing the operations of the campus buildings.

These efforts are delivering measurable results. The College has already surpassed its 2030 energy-intensity target and continues to work toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 37 per cent by 2030, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero campuses by 2050.

Algonquin’s progress has also earned external recognition. The Ottawa Campus received the Energy Management Excellence Award for the education sector, recognizing outstanding verified energy performance. The Pembroke Campus became the first college in Canada to earn ENERGY STAR certification, received the Energy Star Building of the Year award and was recognized by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Canada for this achievement.

As Campus Sustainability Month is celebrated across North America, Algonquin College continues to advance projects and initiatives that support a more efficient, resilient and low-carbon future.
