Building Science learner lands project coordinator role before graduation

Algonquin College’s Spring 2026 Convocation ceremony is occurring from June 23 to June 26 at the Canadian Tire Centre. During the event, the College will recognize thousands of talented and capable learners who are leaving our classrooms to enter the working world.
One of these students is Oskar Linkruus, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Building Sciences. When Linkruus enrolled in the Building Science degree program, he did so with the goal of becoming a project manager in the construction industry. Before he even finished his final exams, he already had a full-time project coordinator role in commercial construction lined up, a role he said his program helped him reach faster than he expected.
“There’s nothing really like it in Canada program-wise,” said Linkruus. “It’s a smaller program, but it’s really high-quality teaching and the teachers are great.”
The program, a four-year honours degree, blends project management, building science, sustainability practices and more with a combination of theoretical study and hands-on learning. According to Linkruus, the multidisciplinary aspect of the program provided him a unique skillset that allowed him to enter management right from the start.
“I’ve always been interested in construction management and design and I have spoken to people who started project management five to 10 years into their careers. A lot of the time, you have to work in the industry — whether it’s labour or supervision or a higher level of engineering — before you can move into project management,” said Linkruus.
“So [the program] gave me an advantage going into the industry, as it fast-tracked me into doing what I wanted to do. During my co-ops, everyone was always surprised how young I was, that I had a chance to be doing that kind of work. I got put in a position where I could succeed and get in the door as soon as I could and not have to walk around the entrance to find a way in.”
Linkruus’ employer granted him a two-month leave of absence before starting his position, giving him the chance to travel to New Zealand and explore his family’s roots. When he comes home to Canada, he’ll officially start his career in commercial construction management.
His advice to graduating students is simple: do your homework.
“Algonquin does a lot of job fairs. I’ve helped host a job fair for my company. And something I noticed a lot is that you need to do the research before you come to these events,” said Linkruus. “A lot of people who would come to talk to us didn’t even know who we were. I’d say have an angle ready. Do pre-research. Don’t just go up and say ‘oh, what do you do?’ You need to make that good first impression.”
Steve Vardy, Building Science program coordinator, spoke highly of Linkruus, saying that he “worked hard to ensure he was always getting the most out of his education at [the College].” Linkruus’ efforts have taken him a long way and his passion for his field has paid dividends. He, like so many of the wonderful graduates of Algonquin College, represents the College’s mission of transforming hopes and dreams into lifelong success.
