Cabinetmaking students craft custom hotdog stand for the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark

Hands-on skills with real-world application and impact. That’s the power of community and connections creating opportunities for learners to highlight their skills.

Earlier this year, the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark approached John McKinlay-Key, Program Coordinator, Cabinetmaking, with a unique request. The embassy was seeking a custom pølsevogn, hotdog stand, for an event on June 2 to commemorate 80 years of diplomatic relations with Canada.

Algonquin College learners earn top honours at 2026 Skills Ontario Competition

Gold medal winner at the Skills Ontario Competition.

OTTAWA, May 6, 2026 — Learners from Algonquin College delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Skills Ontario Competition, held May 4-5 in Toronto, earning a total of three gold, three silver and four bronze medals across a wide range of skilled trade and technology categories.

A team of 28 students represented the College, trained by a team of dedicated faculty coaches and competing in disciplines spanning carpentry, automotive service, cybersecurity, aircraft maintenance and more. Their success highlights the strength of Algonquin College’s polytechnic approach, where hands-on, industry-aligned learning prepares graduates to excel in real-world environments.

Meet our Valedictorian Graeme Smith

As we prepare for the upcoming 2025 Spring Convocation, we are pleased to highlight our valedictorians who will be speaking to their respective classes during their ceremonies.

Graeme Smith is graduating from the Powerline Technician program in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence.

During Graeme’s first three terms, he earned nothing below an A-. Additionally, he has contributed to the Powerline Technician program by offering many welcome suggestions for program improvement.
