You’re a busy person. You don’t always remember these things in the face of all your other work and home tasks. You need Sprouty.
Sprouty is a web-based application Cameron Carley and his team of fellow Algonquin College students will debut Friday at the virtual RE/ACTION Showcase. RE/ACTION draws together students, educators and local professionals in a forum devoted to new research and innovative projects.
Carley describes the Sprouty prototype as his final “passion project” before he graduates in January from the Computer Engineering Technology – Computer Science program.
“I feel very lucky to have the chance to pursue it,” he says. “I love plants, my mom was an avid gardener. I recently bought a house and I need plants in it to make it feel like home. But I have so much going on in my life right now and I have a limited attention span for certain real-world applications like watering.”

In honour of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day on November 19, 2021, we are profiling a few Algonquin students past and present who are entrepreneurs.
Learning the ins and outs of life as an entrepreneur is changing the mindset and the future prospects of a young businesswoman studying at Algonquin College online from her home on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin.
For the past eight years, Puran, 26, has been operating a car rental business in Saint Maarten, the Dutch portion of the island 300 km east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea. Tourism is the lifeblood of the 87 square-kilometre island, which has been divided between the Dutch and the French since 1648.
“Tourism is really the only business we have,” Puran says, and in good years it is a very good business indeed. About one million people visit the island annually in peak times, enough to keep Puran and her many competitors busy.
But the economy of Saint Martin has suffered massively since 2017, when it was one of the Caribbean islands devastated by Hurricane Irma. The Category 5 storm destroyed roughly one-third of the buildings on the Dutch side and damaged 90 per cent of structures. Seventy per cent of Puran’s uninsured inventory was damaged or destroyed by the storm.

“This is crazy.” That’s how 24-year-old second year animation student Maïta Mutonji described what she was feeling when she found out she had been awarded a Jam Filled Diversity in Animation Scholarship. “I was really happy and it (winning) gave me a boost of confidence, for sure,” she said.
Jam Filled, an Ottawa Animation Studio, created a scholarship for students in four Animation programs, including Algonquin College. Jam Filled Entertainment, a Boat Rocker company, announced the inaugural recipients of its scholarship program focused on attracting students from diverse backgrounds to the animation industry. The Jam Filled Diversity in Animation (JFDIA) scholarship program provides financial support and mentorship opportunities to promising second year animation program students.
