Celebrate Canadian Library Month!
Posted on Wednesday, October 7th, 2026
October is Canadian Library Month, a time to celebrate the important role libraries play in our communities and to highlight the many ways they support learning, discovery and connection. This year’s theme is “Loud for Libraries,” encouraging us to recognize and celebrate the many contributions libraries make to our lives.
At Algonquin College Library, we’re celebrating by connecting our students with library resources both on and off campus.
Meet the Ottawa Public Library
On Thursday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Ottawa Public Library’s Nepean Branch will be joining us in the Knowledge Keepers space (Room C350).
Their team will be on campus to:
- Showcase their fiction collection and introduce students to some great recreational reading options.
- Help students sign up for an Ottawa Public Library card.
- Talk with students about the resources, services and collections available through their local public library.
This is a great opportunity to encourage students to explore reading for pleasure alongside their academic work. A public library card can open the door to much more than books, including digital resources, programs, community services, and learning opportunities.
Faculty: Consider mentioning the OPL visit to your students or encouraging them to stop by the table between classes!
Did You Know you can borrow from other libraries?
A table will be set up alongside the Ottawa Public Library to inform the AC community about Sm@rtLibrary cards.
Sm@rtLibrary is a partnership of libraries in the National Capital Region that brings together public, academic and specialized libraries in one consolidated search tool. It allows users to discover resources held by participating libraries across the region.
If students or faculty are looking for a book that isn’t available through the Algonquin College Library, there are options beyond our own collection.
Algonquin students and employees can obtain a Sm@rtLibrary card from the campus library desk. When borrowing from a participating library for the first time, users need to present their Sm@rtLibrary card along with their Algonquin AC Card.

Celebrate Libraries with Our Book Display
We’re also celebrating Canadian Library Month right here in the library.
Visit the physical book display in Collection Room II, featuring books that celebrate libraries and put a spotlight on the people, places and stories connected to them.
This Canadian Library Month, let’s get Loud for Libraries! Contact the library if you have questions or would like to connect.
