Meet valedictorian Cyrell Colon, ACCE — Welding & Fabrication Techniques
Posted on Wednesday, June 10th, 2026
Why did you choose Algonquin College?
When I was searching for one of the best schools in Canada for welding, Algonquin College immediately stood out to me because of its strong reputation in the skilled trades and its emphasis on hands-on learning. I wanted a program that focused not only on theory, but also on practical experience that would prepare me for a real career in the industry. I knew that if I was going to dedicate myself to learning welding, I wanted to learn from experienced professionals and make the most of the opportunity. Looking back now, I can confidently say it was absolutely worth it.
What is your favourite memory from your time at Algonquin College?
One of my favourite memories was participating in the Northern Youth Camp. It was very meaningful for me because I saw myself in those young students, they were curious and excited to learn what welding is all about, just like I was when I was younger. I truly enjoyed sharing my knowledge and introducing them to different welding processes such as MIG welding, stick welding and oxy-acetylene and plasma cutting. It was especially rewarding to watch them create projects of their own, like wolves, eagles and even their names using the plasma cutter. Seeing their excitement and creativity made the experience unforgettable and gave even more meaning to my journey at college.
What does being named valedictorian mean to you?
Being named valedictorian is truly a great honour, and I am deeply grateful for the recognition. At the same time, I see it as representing everyone in the program because we all worked hard, dedicated countless hours and overcame challenges together. Welding teaches you that nothing is perfect on the first try, and I think that reflects the entire learning experience. Success comes from persistence, growth and showing up every day with the willingness to improve. Receiving this recognition motivates me to continue working hard and supporting others along the way.
What advice do you have for future students?
Do not be afraid to make mistakes because mistakes are part of the learning process. Take your time mastering the basics, ask questions whenever you need help and avoid comparing yourself to others because everyone improves at their own pace. Focus on becoming a little better every day, and do not give up when things become frustrating. Challenges are part of the journey, and they help you grow stronger and more skilled. Most importantly, enjoy what you are doing and have passion for your work, because that passion will keep you motivated to succeed.
What did you enjoy most about your program?
What I enjoyed most about the program was the hands-on learning experience. You are not only studying concepts in the classroom, you are actually building and creating things with your own hands. Being able to see your improvement over time is very motivating and rewarding. There is a strong sense of pride that comes from completing a project and knowing that you created it yourself. That feeling made all the hard work worthwhile. I also really enjoyed working with different departments as a student staff assistant. It was a fun and valuable experience that allowed me to learn even more, meet different people, and become more motivated to continue improving both personally and professionally
Algonquin College’s 2026 Convocation ceremonies will take place from June 23-26, 2026, at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Graduates will participate in 12 ceremonies over four days.
