Meet valedictorian Lionel Messe School of Business and Hospitality
Posted on Thursday, June 11th, 2026
Why did you choose Algonquin College?
I chose Algonquin College because I wanted to study at a strong and well-recognized institution that would provide a high-quality education and practical learning experience. I also heard very positive feedback about the College. Another important reason was the diversity of the student community, including many international students, which allowed me to meet different people, learn from different perspectives and grow both academically and personally
What is your favourite memory from your time at Algonquin College?
One of my favourite memories was spending time in Building X with my friends. We would go bowling, play pool and enjoy those moments together. I also enjoyed going to the piano room, which was a quiet space where I could relax and play music. These moments helped me balance school and personal life, and they made my experience at Algonquin very memorable.
What does being named valedictorian mean to you?
I feel very honoured to be named valedictorian. At the same time, I see it as something that represents all of us, because my classmates worked just as hard. I don’t see myself as different from them. This recognition motivates me to continue improving myself and to set a positive example. I want to represent my class in the best way possible.
What advice do you have for future students?
My advice to future students is to stay consistent and trust the process. Attend classes regularly, put in the effort and don’t give up when challenges arise. At the same time, make sure to enjoy the experience, because Algonquin is a place where you can learn, grow and become a better version of yourself.
What did you enjoy about your program?
What I enjoyed most about my program was how hands-on it was. It allowed me to apply what I was learning through real-world situations, including work placement experience. I also gained practical skills using tools like Excel and QuickBooks, which are essential in accounting. My professors were very supportive and guided me based on my goals, especially my interest in becoming a CPA. This made the experience very valuable.
Algonquin College’s 2026 Convocation ceremonies will take place from June 23-26, 2026, at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Graduates will participate in 12 ceremonies over four days.
