National Dental Hygienists Week: Meet Megan Watters, an AC Dental Hygiene Student

April is Oral Health Month, and April 4–10 marks National Dental Hygienists Week! This special week is a great reminder for Canadians to prioritize their oral health and recognize how daily habits like brushing and flossing, along with regular dental visits, play a vital role in overall well-being.

To celebrate, we’re spotlighting Algonquin College’s Dental Hygiene program by sharing the stories of students currently enrolled in the program.

Meet Megan Watters, Megan is currently studying to be a Dental Hygienist at Algonquin College. Algonquin College Dental Hygienist student

“I chose to explore a career in dental hygiene because I’ve always had a passion for helping people and making a real difference in their lives. I love how hands-on and interactive dental hygiene is, and with my background being in biology, I’m equally drawn to the science behind what I’m learning. What I enjoy most is connecting with so many different individuals, learning about their life stories and being able to provide support and care in such a meaningful way. After all, a smile can say more than words.

Every day in this program reinforces why I chose this path. Even through the late nights and in-depth projects, I know what I’m learning is so valuable, and I love sharing that knowledge with the clients I see as I continue to progress through this program into my career. For me, dental hygiene is more than just about oral health, it’s about building relationships with my clients so they feel confident, comfortable, and proud of their smiles. At the end of the day, I want everyone I meet in my career to leave not only feeling confident in their oral health, but genuinely happy with the care they receive.”
