National Dental Hygienists Week: Meet Arwa Buznad, an AC Dental Hygiene Student

April is Oral Health Month, and April 4–10 marks National Dental Hygienists Week! This special week is a great reminder for Canadians to prioritize their oral health and recognize how daily habits like brushing and flossing, along with regular dental visits, play a vital role in overall well-being.

To celebrate, we’re spotlighting Algonquin College’s Dental Hygiene program by sharing the stories of students currently enrolled in the program.

Meet Arwa Buznad, Arwa is currently studying to be a Dental Hygienist at Algonquin College.

“I chose to explore a career in dental care because I want to help reduce the fear and stigma that many people have about going to the Algonquin College Dental Hygienist student dentist, especially kids. A lot of children grow up feeling nervous or scared about dental visits, and those feelings can follow them into adulthood. I’d like to be someone who changes that experience by making patients feel comfortable, understood, and safe during their appointments.

Dental care is important for overall health, but sometimes people avoid it because of past experiences or common stereotypes. I’m interested in learning how to create a more positive environment where patients feel supported and not judged. Helping kids build confidence about dental visits early on could make a big difference in their health.

Exploring this career also interests me because it combines science, healthcare, and helping people. I like the idea of using my skills to help others stay healthy while also making dental care feel less intimidating for the next generation.”
