April is National Woodworking Month, a yearly celebration since 1990 dedicated to highlighting the artistry, skill, and tradition of crafting with wood. It serves as a time for hobbyists and professionals to engage in projects, learn new techniques, and celebrate craftsmanship through workshops, special events, and tool sales.
To celebrate, we’re highlighting the Algonquin Wolves Loggersports team, based out of the Pembroke Campus. The team has been a long-standing part of student life, with a history rooted in the Forestry programs and the campus’ connection to the forestry industry. The team has been a part of the Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association (CILA) since at least 1999.
Known for their grit and determination, the team competes in events such as chainsaw racing, log rolling, pole climbing, pulp tossing, and axe throwing. With athletes training multiple times per week, their work ethic, resilience and team pride are a big part of what makes the program so special.
The team delivered a strong and spirited 2026 season, reflecting the strength, depth and continued growth of the program. The Men’s team won first place in Chainsaw Racing at both the Fleming College and Dalhousie University competitions. The Jack and Jill team won the Swede Saw event at Dalhousie.
“Loggersports is pretty unique; it’s one of the only sports left with an element of danger.” Said Laura Middlekoop, Algonquin College Loggersports athlete.
“I think we learn a lot together when men and women are on the same team. Men have the physicality, but women bring a different perspective, like a little more finesse,” she continued.
Another teammate, Connor Smith, echoed the benefits of participating, adding, “I’m really glad I joined the team, I recommend everyone does. It’s a lot of fun.”
While many athletes come from the Forestry Technician and Urban Forestry programs, the team is open to students from other programs as well. Participants have joined out of
general interest, contributing to a well-rounded and highly engaged team. One athlete, for example, is in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
Funding participation in these competitions is facilitated through sponsorships and community support to help offset travel and competition costs, in addition to support provided through the Students’ Association. Shaw Lumber in Pembroke, and The Ottawa River Hydro have been great supporters in recent years with donations in wood for practice, climbing pole donation and set-up.
Congratulations to the Loggersports on an incredible season, making Algonquin College proud across the province and across Canada.
