Office Administration students partner with Canadian Blood Services

Algonquin College Level 4 students in the Office Administration – ExecutiveStudents in E Building at an information table raising awareness for Canadian Blood Services (OAE) program are raising awareness around saving lives with their capstone project.

Be a Hero – You’re Somebody’s Type is a student-led initiative partnering with Canadian Blood Services (CBS). This education and awareness campaign is designed to highlight the need for and importance of blood, plasma, stem cells and organ donation.

On March 20, students were in E Building to sign up participants for the College’s “Partners for Life” team.

“When we started our campaign on March 6, our Partners for Life team had just over 50 members,” said Connie Poupore, Professor, Finance, Office and Legal Studies. “Through our on-campus team recruitment efforts in March, OAE students have increased that number to 154 team members in just two weeks.”

Wednesday brought the total to date to approximately 180 team members. The final day to sign up on campus is Wednesday, Mach. 27. Alternatively, you can scan the QR code to join anytime.

The capstone course combines project management and event planning skills. Working in groups, students create, plan, implement and manage a project of their choice. Budgetary and project constraints, resources, project goals and timelines, risks and milestones are all considerations in how the students manage their project.

Steve Gleddie, CBS volunteer and lead for Stem Cell Swab Clinics attended the March 13 drive and completed 40 stem cell swabs. High school and college campuses are great venues for stem cell donors as the eligible donor age group is between 18-35 years of age.

Tables are set up in the E Building on Wednesdays between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the Algonquin College community is invited to join the Partners for Life Team and learn about the need for and importance of donating to Canadian Blood Services.

Individuals who register with the AC team are eligible to win one of two $50 gift certificates. The draw will take place on April 3.  Click here for more information.
