Trent Correy Gets Animated!

Animation grad builds magical kingdoms at Disney Animation

When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who you are. But it helps if you’re an Algonquin College grad.

Trent Correy’s career dreams have come true at Disney Animation, where he has worked on acclaimed movies like Zootopia, Moana, and Frozen. The Ottawa-born artist has worked in Los Angeles for five years, and not a day goes by that he doesn’t employ the skills he learned at the College.

“Learning the fundamentals in hand drawn animation was amazing,” he says, noting Algonquin is one of the only schools that teaches classic 2-D techniques. Those lessons bring unique perspective to Correy’s work in 3-D and digital animation.

His Algonquin instructors – all veterans of Ottawa’s thriving animation industry – also “drove home” the need for being a team player and having a strong work ethic. Correy brought those mindsets to his first job with Ottawa’s Mercury Filmworks.

“Ottawa has a very rich animation history and some of the best studios in Canada are here,” he says. “There is direct feeding ground.”

His career took him to Vancouver before California came calling. Correy’s recent stint at Disney has been magical.

He specializes in the “movement, body mechanics, talking, and singing” of animated characters – essentially helping bring actors’ performances to life. “They have such a legacy in animation,” he says of Disney. “To be an animator there and help bring these characters to life is so amazing.”

His advice to aspiring animators: it’s worth all the sacrifice.

“If you really love it, and you want to be paid to draw, it’s a pretty cool job.”
