You asked, the President answered: Press conference addresses student questions

More than 50 students across the College’s broadcasting and journalism programs compiled a list of 14 questions for President and CEO Claude Brulé which they posed at the Nov. 18 Storytelling Fundamentals Press Conference held at Algonquin College.

Questions covered topics such as housing affordability, disability support, the future of remote learning, sexual assault prevention, COVID-19 protocols, vegetarian options on campus and the College’s enforcement of outstanding campus policies. Students also took the opportunity to become better acquainted with the President, delving into more personal questions such as how music has impacted his life and how his career journey influenced where he is today.

Learners sit in tiered seating in an Algonquin College Ottawa campus classroom. Students jot down notes in notebooks and on laptops while the President delivers his answers to questions posed during the press conference.

President Brulé shared candidly about his experience as a vegetarian and highlighted the many vegetarian options available to students on campus, including his favourite; the veggie pizza.

“I know that the vegetarian options available vary quite a bit throughout the season but there are consistently five or six vegetarian options available at the cafeteria,” said Brulé. “Food Services is always looking for ideas, so if you want to see the plant-based meal of your choice available on campus have a conversation with their team.”

When asked about what he perceives the College’s strengths to be post-pandemic, President Brulé’s tone was sentimental: “What I’ve come to notice is the vibe on campus, it’s so great to see the hallways filled, people beaming and people keeping busy with their studies.”

President Brulé closed out the conference on a more personal note, sharing how music has played an integral part in his life and career: “Music and I are inseparable, I listen to music all of the time. From a young age I’ve listened to music when I work, when I studied. My favourite era of music is of course the one I grew up with, the 70s, but I like modern music too.”

Valuable information regarding financial aid, disability support, sexual violence prevention and mental health support was also shared throughout the conference. Learners are encouraged to reach out to Student Support Services and/or Security Services should they need any assistance in these areas.
