Youth share Indigenous traditions

On July 14, a group of participants from Northern Youth Abroad spoke to a small crowd at the Mamidosewin Centre to hear aboutYouth from the Northern Youth Abroad program visit the Mamidosewin Centre Indigenous cultures and traditions from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

The five speakers, aged 16 to 20, spoke about their small communities and towns, living conditions, hunting, education and cultural activities. They shared photos, carvings and a “hand slapping” speed activity that all participants took part in and enjoyed.

Northern Youth Abroad seeks to foster leadership, cross-cultural awareness, individual career goals and global citizenship in the youth of the north. The program promotes success in education by providing life-changing experiences through volunteer work and travel. Fifteen participants are currently visiting the Ottawa region for touring, education and speaking sessions.
