Counselling Services offers student and employee workshops to help participants develop knowledge and skills related to academic performance, career development, and mental health.

Group Work That Works Pt 1 -Secrets to Creating Great Group Projects

Do you cringe when your professors assign group projects? Do you dread completing these projects because you know it’s going to be difficult to get everyone on board to get the job done? This workshop will teach you how to set expectations, assign roles and responsibilities, create standards for your group to follow, facilitate communication, and increase motivation in your group so that your group can work together to successfully complete your project.

Maintaining Healthy Teams: Group Work Pt 2

Challenges related to communication and conflict styles exist in many groups. Do you know you’re your communication style? What about your conflict resolution style? This workshop will focus on how to use different communication and conflict resolution styles to ensure that your group is able to overcome challenges effectively depending on the various needs of the group.      

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff College Edition– Adjusting to college life

College brings about a whole new set of challenges; learning some key problem-solving tips and how to deal with difficult situations that are known to arise in college are essential to success. This interactive workshop covers the 10 things students did not know they needed to thrive at college.

Time Management – Rock the Clock

Managing your time and keeping on top of your work are the keys to success as a college student. This workshop will introduce you to some simple techniques to plan your time more effectively. A learning strategist will teach you how to build an “Ideal Weekly Schedule” and a “Semester Plan,” and you will also discuss good techniques for getting into a routine to stay on top of your work.

Getting Started and Avoiding Procrastination – From To Do to Done

“If I’d just started earlier, I could have done so much better.” Although many students claim to work better under the pressure of deadlines, not having enough time to complete assignments can mean that you are not reaching your potential as a student. Learn to maximize your marks by starting early and breaking down your assignments into manageable parts using an “assignment tracker.” This workshop is also about sharing techniques that will help you break the habit of putting off work and learn strategies to avoid procrastination.

Stress Management – Say Yes to Less Stress

Balancing your course-load and personal commitments can be a stressful experience for many college students. This workshop, led by an Algonquin College counsellor, will help students learn more about stress. It will also introduce practical strategies to help with stress management so that you can focus better on your learning!

Perfectionism – Taming Your Inner Critic

Perfectionism is a trait that is often associated with achievement and success. It’s OK to want to work hard and achieve a goal, but the question is “at what cost?”. If you are picky and have too high of standards and want to feel better, reduce stress and enjoy your life more, then this workshop will cover ways to tame the inner critic to allow you to live the life you want.

Tame Your Temper – Emotion Regulation Strategies

As hard as we may try to stay calm, situations always arise that push our buttons. While feeling anger isn’t a bad thing, it is important to constructively express that anger. This workshop helps us recognize our emotions related to anger and how we can constructively express our needs and manage outbursts.

Test-Writing and Dealing with Test Anxiety, Ace that Test Part 2

For many students, exam time can be filled with stress, anxiety, and worry. This workshop will help you to better access the material that you have learned while studying so that you can demonstrate all that you have learned during the semester. There will be a focus on strategies to reduce anxiety in testing situations.

Resilience

Our current reality is an unusual and difficult time for everyone. In your studies, you may be experiencing some additional stress or setbacks, which could be impacting your wellness. Join this session for a discussion on building your resiliency in times of difficulty so that you can bounce back from challenges and overcome obstacles.

Communicating Effectively for College/Workplace Success

Communication and interpersonal skills are fundamental to success, inside or outside of school or the workplace. This workshop will look at communication techniques to improve relationships, improve interpersonal skills for work and school success and help us examine ways to improve our current communication skills.

Stress-Free Career Adaptability 

Adaptability is a skill needed for success in work, learning, and life, and it can feel overwhelming to many people.  In this 90-minute interactive workshop, the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale is administered and will help guide participants through activities to plan small concrete steps for developing openness and adaptability when career planning.

Choices and Chances: Realistic Career Planning 

Through interactive discussions and practical activities, participants will learn how to assess skills, values, interests, and personal preferences to align themselves with various career options and researching those options. We will discuss the idea that career decisions are not solely determined by our choices, but are also influenced by external factors and unforeseen circumstances. By understanding the interplay between choice and chance, participants will gain a more realistic perspective on career decision-making.

Having Productive and Unbiased Career Conversations 

This workshop explores the topic of unconscious biases and the impact on career conversations. We will examine how biases can unintentionally influence our perceptions and decisions, potentially limiting students’ options or reinforcing stereotypes. By raising awareness of these biases, participants will learn how to recognize and mitigate them, ensuring that career conversations remain fair, objective, and supportive for all students.

Labour Market Information:  Where are the Jobs? 

Many students want to know about the hiring trends in their field, yet lack the resources to find and critically analyze the information.  This workshop will help students learn how to use Labour Market Information (LMI) resources, critically analyze the data, and identify factors that can influence hiring in their field.

Employee Workshops and Certifications

Skills training for employees to support student mental health in order to improve their academic success. We offer certification and college-designed workshops available for all employees. Registration is done through Employee Learning under ‘Health and Wellness’ courses.

Employee Workshops

safeTALK

This 3-hour face-to-face workshop alerts one to warning signs that indicate that someone is considering suicide. The workshop emphasizes the importance of recognizing the signs, communicating with the person considering suicide, and getting help or resources for the individual.

Target Audience: This workshop is ideal for employees who are looking to increase their awareness about suicide and the warning signs. If you are unable to attend the two-day ASIST workshop or unsure if that is the course for you, this is a good starting point.

 

ASIST – (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training)

This two-day face-to-face workshop features powerful audiovisuals, discussions, and simulations.  ASIST equips individuals with the skills to identify when someone might be contemplating suicide and how to collaborate with them to develop a plan that ensures their immediate safety.

Target Audience: This workshop is ideal for all employees who would like to learn and use the ASIST model. Participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop. 

This workshop is not recommended for people who have had a recent suicide loss.

 

Supporting Student Mental Health

This 3-hour virtual workshop is for college employees looking to help students by learning how to recognize the signs of mental health distress, knowing how to respond in a supportive way, and referring to appropriate resources on campus and in the community.

Target Audience: This workshop is ideal for employees who are looking to increase their awareness about mental health and the signs of distress. If you are unable to attend the two-day MHFA workshop or unsure if that is the course for you, this is a good starting point.

Mental Health First Aid – Basic

This two-day face-to-face workshop is intended for adults interacting with adults (18 years and older). This course focuses on the four most common mental health disorders including substance-related, mood-related, anxiety and trauma-related, and psychotic disorders. This workshop helps participants attain a comprehensive grasp of the five fundamental steps outlined in ALGEE, a framework for having confident conversations with others about mental health issues. 

Target Audience: This workshop is ideal for all employees who are interested in learning more about mental health and common mental health problems. Participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop.

Positive Space

This 3-hour face-to-face information session will help you build the practical skills and knowledge to counter homophobia, transphobia, and heterosexism in college settings. The session will provide an introduction to LGBTQ culture, cover common myths and terms, illustrate the important role of an ally, and give you a chance to discuss case studies in an open, respectful environment. These sessions also provide you with resources and materials so that you can act as a Positive Space resource person.
Target Audience: This workshop is ideal for all employees who work with students in front line support or teaching roles. Participants do not need any formal training to attend the workshop.
