Facilities Planning, Sustainability and Development
Facilities Planning, Sustainability and Development provides strategic leadership for the planning, development, renewal, and stewardship of Algonquin College facilities across the Ottawa and Pembroke campuses.
The department supports the College’s academic mission, student experience, operational needs, and long-term growth through integrated campus planning, capital project delivery, sustainability initiatives, technical services, furniture planning, and facilities information management.
Working collaboratively with academic departments, operational teams, consultants, contractors, and external stakeholders, the department helps ensure that College facilities remain safe, accessible, sustainable, functional, and aligned with institutional priorities.
Strategic Planning and Campus Development
The department provides leadership in campus planning, infrastructure strategy, and space management through institutional planning initiatives, including the College Space Management Committee.
This work supports the long-term planning framework required for academic growth, operational requirements, infrastructure renewal, sustainability objectives, and future campus development.
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the planning, configuration, and allocation of academic and administrative space across College campuses
- Supporting implementation of the College’s Master Campus Development Plan and future campus growth initiatives
- Developing long-term campus infrastructure and development strategies aligned with institutional priorities
- Managing commercial property leases on behalf of the College
- Planning classroom, laboratory, office, and support space layouts and relocations
- Managing campus wayfinding and signage standards
- Supporting facilities planning studies, space reviews, and institutional planning requests
The department plays a key role in ensuring that campus spaces and infrastructure investments are planned effectively, efficiently, and responsibly to support current operations and future institutional growth.
Capital Projects and Facilities Development
Facilities Development provides professional project leadership, technical coordination, procurement support, and construction management services for the College’s capital and infrastructure renewal programs.
The team manages projects from early planning and feasibility through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, occupancy, and operational transition.
Projects support a broad range of academic, administrative, student service, retail, recreation, infrastructure, and tenant needs.
Project delivery categories generally include:
- Major Capital Projects — projects with an estimated value above $1 million
- Capital Projects and Capital Renewal Projects — projects with an estimated value between $100,000 and $1 million
- Minor Capital Projects — projects with an estimated value below $100,000
Facilities Development supports a broad range of project scopes, including:
- Major capital projects and multi-year infrastructure programs
- New building developments, additions, and expansions
- Renovations and modernization projects
- Adaptive reuse and repurposing initiatives
- Infrastructure replacement and renewal programs
- Occupied campus phased construction projects
- Space refresh projects, including painting, flooring, furniture, and finish upgrades
- Electrical, IT, AV, and building system modifications to support new or revised space use
Core services include:
- Feasibility studies and infrastructure assessments
- Consultant and contractor procurement support
- Budget development and cost management
- Schedule and risk management
- Construction coordination and contract administration
- Stakeholder engagement and user group coordination
- Commissioning and occupancy planning

The department also supports Vendor of Record programs and procurement processes for consultants and contractors across multiple disciplines and construction categories.

Furniture Procurement and Moving Services
Facilities Management supports academic, administrative, and operational needs through furniture procurement, workplace move coordination, and event setup support.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating pricing, procurement, and installation of new furniture
- Preparing test fits for workplace relocations and event setup requests
- Establishing and maintaining furniture and finish standards
- Coordinating internal moves and furniture-related service requests
- Supporting special event space coordination and setup requirements
Sustainability and Infrastructure Stewardship
Sustainability is integrated into campus planning, infrastructure renewal, and capital project delivery to support the College’s long-term environmental and operational objectives.
The department supports initiatives related to:
- Sustainable building and infrastructure design
- Energy efficiency and conservation
- Low-carbon and resilient infrastructure strategies
- Lifecycle asset planning and renewal
- Building performance improvements
- Infrastructure modernization and optimization
- Long-term operational sustainability

Technical Services and Facilities Information Management

- Computer-aided drafting and technical drawing support
- Facilities records and drawing management
