DuaneDuane McNair

Vice-President, Finance and Administration
Algonquin College

Duane McNair is the Vice-President, Finance and Administration and has worked at Algonquin College since 2000. He sits on the Board of Directors of the Algonquin College Foundation and serves as the Foundation’s Treasurer. Duane previously held the positions of Director, Finance and Administrative Services, Business Administrator in the Faculty of Arts, Media and Design and Manager, Financial Services at the College. Prior to working at the College, Mr. McNair held various financial management roles for social services agencies and financial institutions.

A Certified General Accountant and graduate of the Bachelor of Mathematics program at the University of Waterloo, Mr. McNair holds the Canadian Risk Management designation and is a member of the Audit Committees for the Ottawa Catholic School Board and the Association of Canadian Community Colleges. He is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree with Laurentian University.

Minister
Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Steven Blaney was first elected to the House of Commons in 2006 and re-elected in 2008 and 2011.

In July 2013, Mr. Blaney was appointed Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Previously, he was appointed Minister of Veterans Affairs in May 2011, and to the additional position of Minister for La Francophonie in February 2013.

Mr. Blaney was appointed Vice-Chair of the Conservative Quebec Caucus and in October 2008, he became Chair. He served on the standing committees on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and on Environment and Sustainable Development. In light of the importance of the mission in Afghanistan, Mr. Blaney later joined the Standing Committee on National Defence and participated in a visit to Kandahar.

In May 2007, Mr. Blaney became Chair of the Standing Committee on Official Languages, which strives to promote linguistic duality throughout the country.

After he graduated from the Université de Sherbrooke, Mr. Blaney became a civil engineer in 1988 and then obtained a Master of Business Administration in 2002 in Lévis. After his studies, he worked as a consultant, an entrepreneur and an advisor for urban infrastructure and environmental technologies.

Mr. Blaney is married to Marie Bouchard and has two children.

All our speakers will be providing enlightening and thought provoking discussions on the current issues and future state of Canadian Cyber Security and Data Privacy.

DBDave Black

Dave Black has been a civilian member of RCMP for over 30 years. He joined the RCMP in a pre-internet / pre-cybercrime era and has transitioned into management of the RCMP’s Cybercrime Fusion Centre (CCFC), in HQ Ottawa’s Federal Policing, National Intelligence Coordination Centre.Dave is an active participant in many Government workgroups linked to cyber security or cybercrime. His duties include strategic assessment of crime trends, development of procedures for incident triage and guidance on security standards and incident response plans. His operational support role is centred on the RCMP’s ongoing commitment to innovative technical support services for both law enforcement and cybercrime prevention initiatives.


DBBonnie Butlin

Executive Director
Canadian Security Partners’ Forum

Bonnie Butlin is Executive Director of the Canadian Security Partners’ Forum (CSPF), and Managing Director of the Canadian Security Executive Forum (CSEF). She serves as the Vice-Chair of The Infrastructure Security Partnership (TISP)’s Public-Private Collaboration Committee (PPCC), based in Alexandria, Virginia. Bonnie has a diverse background in the fields of defence, intelligence and security, and was the sole author of a commissioned study for the Federal Court of Canada on National Security and the Administration of Justice. Bonnie was recently named to Security Magazine’s “Most Influential in Security” international list for 2013. She will be inducted into the International Women in Homeland Security and Emergency Management Hall of Fame in San Antonio, Texas, in November. Bonnie holds an MA in International Affairs.

Legal and Consulting Services

Michael Power, based in Toronto, provides legal and consulting services to national and international clients on governance, technology, privacy and security-related issues. He has extensive experience providing legal and strategic advice in both the public and private sectors. During his career, he has been a partner with a national law firm and served as an executive responsible for privacy and security at a provincial healthcare agency.

Michael Power has written extensively on privacy and information security issues. He is the author of The Law of Privacy, published by Lexis-Nexis in 2013 as well as the Access to Information and Privacy Title of Halsbury’s Laws of Canada (2005 and 2011). He is also the co-author of the American Bar Association’s Sailing in Dangerous Waters: A Director’s Guide to Data Governance (2004).

Michael Power is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society. He also is a member of International Association of Privacy Professionals and currently serves on its Canadian Advisory Board.


DBGreg Young

Vice President
Gartner

Greg Young is a Research Vice President in Gartner covering network security. He is the lead author for the Network Firewall Magic Quadrant, IPS Magic Quadrant and Infrastructure Protection Hype Cycle. He also co-authors the UTM Magic Quadrant. Mr. Young has more than 20 years of experience in IT security in product companies, and in both the private and public sectors. He spent his military career in technology security and was head of IT security for the Federal Department of Communications. He received the confederation medal from the Governor General of Canada for his work with smart card security, headed a large security consulting practice, was chief security architect for a security product company, and headed several large security consulting practices.

Head Cyber Security, Treasury Board Secretariat
Province of Ontario, Canada

Kent Schramm is currently the Head Cyber Security, for the Province of Ontario. The Cyber Security Branch is responsible for providing a full suite of cyber security services in support of the Province. Before assuming this position, Kent served at the National Cyber Security Directorate, Public Safety Canada in Ottawa for over two years. Leading several initiatives, he laid the foundation for establishing cyber situational awareness for the Government of Canada. In addition, Kent led the development of a national cyber incident response framework.

Prior to joining Public Safety Canada, Kent served 22 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Communications and Electronics Engineer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He served in a variety of operational and headquarters staff roles across Canada and at NORAD Headquarters in the United States. Since 1996, he has specialized in cyber operations for domestic, multi-national and deployed operations in Bosnia, Sudan and Afghanistan. Upon graduation from university, Kent served as a Forensic Specialist for several years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Peter Hammerschmidt

Director General, National Cyber Security
Public Safety Canada

Peter Hammerschmidt joined the National and Cyber Security Branch at Public Safety Canada as Director General for National Cyber Security in August 2013. In this role, he is responsible for the development of national cyber security policy, coordinating the implementation of Canada’s Cyber Security Strategy, and overseeing the Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre.

Previously, Peter has occupied executive positions in the Privy Council Office, Treasury Board Secretariat and the Department of National Defence. Throughout his career, Peter has occupied roles involving the provision of advice to senior officials on issues related to complex policy and program issues, extensive horizontal consultations and partnership-building, as well as international negotiations.

A native of southern Ontario, Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with a Major in Political Studies from Queen’s University. He also possesses a Master of Arts with a concentration in Strategic Studies (International Relations and Intelligence Studies), from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.


GwenGwen Beauchemin

Director, Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC)
Public Safety Canada

Gwen is the Director of the Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC) at Public Safety Canada, which she joined in the January 2014. Prior to CCIRC, in September 2009, Gwen was posted to the Canadian High Commission, Canberra Australia, as a Senior Counsellor. Prior to that posting, from 2002-2009, she was a Director at Communications Security Establishment (CSE), where she led teams in a variety of roles the IT Security Branch and the Chief Information Office, including an assignment at Public Safety Canada in 2006-7 in the Canadian Cyber Security Task Force. Prior to the Federal Public Service, Gwen held a variety of roles including managing Verification teams, Portfolio Management, Software Release Manager, Project Manager, Team Leader Sustainability and software developer with Bell Northern Research and later, Nortel Networks, where she worked on a variety of products including voice recognition applications, multi-media broadband design and network operations center products. Gwen holds an Honours Bachelor of Computer Science, Carleton University.

Ken is the President of the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance for the Americas as well as the CEO of InnovaNord. Recognized as a global Cyber Security leader, he regularly advises G5 government agencies and global 500 Corporations. Ken is a member of the Virtus Management Group, which provides management and financial advisory services to organizations that face the unique challenges of managing growth, through market expansion and value creation. He is a Fellow of the New Westminster College in British Columbia. Ken served in the Canadian Armed forces for 12 years in both peace and wartime operations throughout the world.


Jefferson Dance

Jefferson Dance is a management security consultant with Seccuris, a leading Canadian Information Security firm headquartered in Winnipeg. With over 15 years in Information Security, he has held senior management positions in Accenture’s global security practice as well as Blackberry’s global programs involving global fortune 100 organizations. As an Accenture InfoSec executive, Jefferson was instrumental in helping secure the Beijing Olympics.
