Student Self-Enrolment: Better for learners, streamlined for employees!

An Algonquin College student is sitting in a chair and using a laptop computer.

The new Thesis Student Portal will change how learners enrol for courses. Today, Algonquin College assigns course schedules to learners. With the new Thesis Student Portal, learners will be able to create their own course schedules, allowing for a completely customizable experience!

This shift to Student Self-Enrolment is directly tied to Priority 2 of the College’s Academic Plan, which is to provide inclusive program delivery that enables choice. What’s more, most College programs support giving learners more flexibility in the Student Self-Enrolment process.

Current state vs. future state

Let’s provide a quick refresher on how Course Registration works today. Basically, the Registrar’s Office (RO) oversees Course Registration from start to finish. This process consists of three steps:

  1. Requirements: The RO verifies that learners meet program-specific requirements and have paid their tuition deposits.
  2. Mass Course Registration: The RO registers learners in the courses that their programs of study require.
  3. Timetable: Learners view their timetables in ACSIS.

With Student Self-Enrolment, learners will be able to take ownership of their academic journey. And good news! This new process will also consist of three simple steps:

  1. Pre-enrolment: Learners who meet program-specific requirements reserve spots in courses before official registration begins.
  2. Re-enrolment: Learners review, adjust, and complete their course schedules for an upcoming Academic Period.
  3. Verification: Learners view their timetables in the Thesis Student Portal.

Employee training

We know that Student Self-Enrolment is going to be a big change for employees, but we’ve got you covered! We’re preparing a comprehensive set of training materials, which includes instruction guides, video tutorials, and more.

Not only will these training materials be easy to understand, but they will also cover all facets of Student Self-Enrolment, bit by bit. In other words, you’ll be able to review these materials at any time and as many times as you want. And don’t worry – training will be available before Thesis SM goes live.

The benefits of Student Self-Enrolment

Student Self-Enrolment offers a number of benefits for employees. Here’s just a couple:

  • Relief of administrative pressure
  • Greater capacity to support learners who may need extra help

Of course, learners will also benefit from this new process. Some of these benefits include:

  • More flexibility and independence when choosing courses
  • An individualized and accessible academic experience

Student Self-Enrolment empowers learners and employees alike, elevating the learning experience at Algonquin College!

We also went over Student Self-Enrolment at our May 2024 R3 Showcase event. Sharon Rendle, Business Systems Analyst, presented a live demo of how the Student Self-Enrolment process works in the Thesis Student Portal.
