Algonquin College Board of Governors approves new Student Commons: Building to become the "heart" of the Woodroffe Campus
[December 10, 2009]

The Algonquin Students’ Association (SA) and Algonquin College administration have once again joined forces to enhance student life at the College. The two organizations are pooling resources to build an anticipated 110,000 square-foot Student Commons facility that will feature large common spaces and lounge areas, an auditorium, study spaces, food services, several student services in a one-stop
shopping model, as well as Students’ Association Board and Administration Offices.

Algonquin College receives $2.3 million NSERC dollars to establish the Algonquin Design Centre

Applied research at Algonquin College received a multi-million dollar boost today as The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology) announced the College will receive $2.3 million College and Community Innovation Program (CCI) dollars to boost innovation and commercialization.

Algonquin College launches Ontario's first Kitchen and Bath Design Program

With help from local business and industry leaders, Algonquin College launched Ontario’s first Kitchen and Bath Design Graduate Certificate program today. Set to begin in January 2010, this program is tailored to industry professionals, and recent design graduates, looking to specialize in residential design of kitchens and bathrooms.

$750,000 from Hydro One puts a charge into Algonquin College's bursaries

The atmosphere was electric at Algonquin College’s Woodroffe Campus as the Electrical Contractors’ Association of Ottawa (ECAO) gave a boost to Algonquin’s Constructing Our Future Campaign with a $250,000 pledge.

Algonquin Convocation: 2,000 graduates, 5 guest speakers, 2 days of celebration

More than 2,000 of the 5,500-strong Algonquin College spring graduating class will attend Convocation ceremonies at Scotiabank Place on Thursday, June 18, and Friday, June 19. Algonquin College President Robert Gillett will preside over the presentation of degrees, diplomas and certificates at five separate ceremonies. In recognition of lifetime achievement and service to the Ottawa community, Algonquin will bestow an Honorary Diploma on David Wallace, Former Regional Vice President and
Managing Director, Eastern and Northern Ontario BMO Harris Private Banking.

Algonquin College sets construction date for new Pembroke Campus
[June 5, 2009]
In front of a crowd of community supporters and business leaders, Algonquin College President Robert Gillett announced the target date of April 1st, 2011 for bulldozers to begin breaking ground on the College’s new Ottawa Valley campus. In a symbolic gesture noting the project’s steady march toward completion, President Gillett presented Pembroke Mayor Ed Jacyno with a toy bulldozer with the dates of groundbreaking and opening of the new Pembroke campus emblazoned on its sides.

New Algonquin College Campus in Perth: Federal and Provincial governments announce $9 million in funding

Algonquin College’s Perth Campus was buzzing with excitement today as Scott Reid, Member of Parliament for LanarkFrontenacLennox and Addington; and Ontario Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, and MPP for Ottawa West Nepean, Jim Watson announced a combined $9million investment to rebuild the campus. The announcement was welcomed with cheers by students and staff at the
College as well as by members of the local community.

Algonquin College Event Management students raise $51,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation

It was a proud moment for the Algonquin College Event Management graduating class this week as they presented the Children’s Wish Foundation with a cheque for $51,000 as part of their “Creating Magic” campaign. Members of the Children’s Wish Foundation and three “wish children” were at Algonquin College for a presentation ceremony to celebrate the students’ fundraising success.

Algonquin continues to perform as a leader in Campus sustainability: One of the first colleges in Ontario to sign national protocol

Algonquin College became the second college in Ontario to sign the Association of Canadian Community College’s (ACCC) Pan-Canadian Protocol for Sustainability. Algonquin’s President Robert Gillett was joined by James Knight, President of the ACCC, on Earth Day to sign this protocol and formally recognize the importance of sustainability on campus, in our classrooms and beyond.

Algonquin College Board of Governors strongly endorses new building projects in Pembroke, Perth

On November 10 the Board of Governors of Algonquin College passed two motions supporting major capital projects – a new campus in downtown Pembroke and a new building in Perth – strongly reaffirming Algonquin’s commitment to college education in the Ottawa Valley.

Algonquin College’s new Paralegal Program is the first in Eastern Ontario to receive accreditation from the Law Society of Upper Canada. This accreditation will enable graduates to meet the Law Society’s educational requirement for licensing.

Conference Board of Canada Leads Discussion on the Workforce Needs of Eastern Ontario

Algonquin College and Hydro One Address the Skills Shortages in the Electrical Delivery Sector

Algonquin College has signed an agreement with Hydro One to attract students into the electrical transmission and distribution utility sector in an effort to continue to address the skilled trades
shortage in this industry. Hydro One has signed agreements with four colleges in the north, east, south and west of Ontario.

Two Algonquin College Alumni Receive Ontario’s Highest Award

[February 19, 2007]
Two graduates from Algonquin College in Ottawa have been honoured with 2006 Ontario Premier’s Awards. Kerry Smith, Ophthalmology Nurse and Corneal-Retrieval Nurse at the Ottawa Hospital and a 1981 graduate of the Registered Practical Nurse program, has won in the Health Sciences category.  Peter Wintonick, CEO of Necessary Illusions Productions Inc. and a 1974 graduate of the Film Production program, has won in the Creative Arts and Design category.

Algonquin Hosts Provincial Marketing Competition

Algonquin College, along with its Competition Sponsor, Bell Canada, is hosting the 27 th annual Ontario
Colleges' Marketing Competition (OCMC) 2006 on November 16 and 17. OCMC 2006 brings hundreds of highly-motivated College graduate-level business students and dynamic faculty together from across Ontario to Ottawa to showcase their business talents and earn top awards for teamwork and strategic thinking. Students will compete in several marketing case-study competitions, to be judged by marketing-industry experts from across Canada.

Small World, Big Picture – Expedition Africa Project Launch

The Small World, Big Picture – Expedition Africa Project was officially launched at Algonquin College on Thursday, September 14, with a video link with Ben Webster, expedition leader, from Cairo, Egypt. The Small World, Big Picture – Expedition Africa Project will traverse the continent of Africa from Egypt to South Africa. This expedition is designed to actively engage Canadian schoolaged students, their teachers and their families with respect to the Continent of Africa, its opportunities, challenges and people.

In the first funding award of its kind, the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation has awarded $3.5 million to 10 colleges under the Ontario Research Commercialization Program (ORCP) to help build college capacity for industry-focused research and commercialization.

Ottawa girls make their own movies at the Women in Media Foundation Inc. Girls’ Television and New Media Camp
[July 6, 2006]
For two weeks this summer, the Women in Media Foundation (WIMF) is hosting a summer day camp at Algonquin College in the Nation’s Capital. The Girls’ Television and New Media Camp gives teenage girls a unique chance to work as camera operators, lighting and audio technicians, and video tape editors as they script, shoot and edit their own videos. The WIMF Girls’ Television and New Media Camp is offered to 10 girls between the ages of 12-15 from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds.

Algonquin College Launches Commercial Pilot and Aviation Management Program with the Ottawa Flying Club

Algonquin College’s Institute of Aviation Studies, within the College’s School of Advanced Technology, has partnered with the Ottawa Flying Club to provide flight training and ground school for its Commercial Pilot and Aviation Management program.

Algonquin College Proclaimed Ontario Hub of Excellence in Nursing Education

The Government of Ontario has proclaimed Algonquin College a Hub of Excellence for Operating Room Nursing Education.  This announcement emphasizes Algonquin’s position as a leader in nursing education and brings with it funding worth $500,000.

The doors of Algonquin Students’ Association’s $5.4 million Soccer Facility officially opened today on Algonquin’s Woodroffe Campus. Algonquin Students’ Association President, Michael Barrett, and Algonquin College President, Robert Gillett, were on hand for the official opening.

Algonquin College Celebrates Photonics with Official Launch of Bachelor’s Degree Program

Algonquin College celebrated the successful conclusion of Phase I of Algonquin’s Photonics Education and Training (PET) Project and the official launch of Phase II, the Bachelor of Applied Technology – Photonics Program, at an event attended by business and industry leaders and government officials on February 6. Dr. Adam Chowaniec, Chairman of the Board of Tundra Semiconductor Corporation and Chair of the Ontario Research and Innovation Council, was the keynote speaker at the event. His speech focused on the role of science and technology in the future of Canada.
