FIND INFORMATION ABOUT INDUSTRY SECTORS

  • SIC and NAICS codes: Developed in the USA Standard Industrial Classification was a system for classifying industries by a four-digit code. Now it is being replaced by the North American Industry Classification system which is 6 digits. In some cases both classifications are being used.  Both numbers can be used to look up a specific company or compeditors in the same industry.
  • Industry Profiles (HRDC) -Industry profiles are a series of standardized economic analyses covering the various sectors of the Canadian economy, with human resources issues as the focal point. Industry profiles are listed along side their SIC/NAICS numbers.
  • The Canadian Encyclopedia - A great source of information on the history of Canadian industry sectors. The historical approach gives some context to available data. Use the search box to look for indivdual industry sectors eg wine industry.
  • Associations - often a goldmine of industry and product information. The internet is a good resource of association information. For Example:
  • U.S. Marketing and Industry - This link takes you to the library's U.S. Marketing subject guide. U.S. industry analysis can be useful when researching Canadian industry.

E-STAT E-STAT containing the CANSIM database is your online resource for socio-economic statistics. "CANSIM is Statistics Canada's key socio-economic database. Updated daily, CANSIM provides fast and easy access to a large range of the latest and most up-to-date statistics available in Canada. CANSIM brings the power of information directly to your desktop.

Newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals are a good source of industry news. Find newspapers and magazines available to you in print at the LRC by typing your keyword into the LRC catalogue search box and limiting your search by format (choose - Periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers).


Find newspapers, magazines and scholarly journals available to you via the LRC databases via the Electronic Journal Locator on the database portal page.  You can search for a particular journal or magazine if you have the title or for titles that contain the keyword of the subject you are seeking. Titles available include: Financial Post Business, Ottawa Business Journal, Report on Business Magazine, Ottawa Citizen, Globe and Mail, National Post and Marketing Magazine and many more.
