What Are Reserves ?
How Do I Reserve Materials?
Faculty's Own Materials

What are Reserves?

Faculty may put material from the Library collection, or their own material, on Reserve for their students. Reserves are an excellent way to ensure that a large number of students have access to assigned or recommended material on an equitable basis. Items are held behind the main desk and may be signed out for a three hour in library loan (3 day loan is also available). Students may search by title for the material on the library catalogue, but may also search under the  RESERVE heading within the catalogue by course code, course name or teacher's name.

How Do I Place Materials on Reserve?

General Requirements

Faculty must have a library card in order to put material on Reserve as the item record and the teacher's record are linked in the database. Allow a minimum of 48 business hours for processing, a little longer at the beginning of term.

Books from the Library Collection

  • Request the book(s) using a form obtainable at the Main desk in the library. A library account is required by faculty who are placing items on reserve.
  • If the item requested is signed out, a hold will be placed on the item and when the item is returned it will be placed on Reserve
  • E-mail requests for material to be put on Reserve are limited to items from the collection of the campus where the course is taught.

Important information to include in an e-mail request for a reserve item from the library collection would include: Information regarding item to be placed on reserve from the collection, Course title, Course number, name of faculty members teaching course (more than one is possible) and library account number/s, number of students in course and a date by which the item can be removed from reserves.
  • For all other requests, see the staff at the Main desk of your local campus library.

Faculty's Own Material

  • Bring the material to the Main Desk at the Library
  • Fill out the required forms making sure to include the important information listed above.
  • Get copyright clearance if necessary. (Library staff may be able to advise you)

Videos from the Library Collection
  • Ask at the Main Desk in the Library where you will have to book the video(s) AND fill out the reserve form(s)
