Student Pow-Wow

Hands drumming during Powwow.

In partnership with Algonquin College, the Mamidosewin Centre hosts a Student Pow-Wow on campus for students to celebrate and express their culture. The Student Pow-Wow is a celebration of all the Indigenous cultures on campus and will feature dances, songs, drumming, and traditions from many of the communities represented at the College.

The goal with the Student Pow-Wow is to get as many students involved as possible. From help organizing the Pow-Wow to dancing and drumming, we want as many Indigenous students as possible to stand up and express their proud heritage.

At the beginning of each academic year in September, we will begin organizing a Pow-Wow committee to help plan, organize, and create a unique Pow-Wow experience. We want students to take charge and truly make this Student Pow-Wow their own. We want student input on how we can create new features and traditions and how we can express our culture in new ways. We will also be bringing in vendors and community members along with Elders for the celebration.

In addition to our Student Pow-Wow, we will create a new drum group each year made up of interested students with the goal of that drum group being one of the host drums at the Pow-Wow. We will be providing drum teachings throughout the year so students will be able to learn how to drum and the teachings that go along with it. We will also be providing workshops on regalia-making and dancing.

All students and staff are invited to attend the Student Pow-Wow and are encouraged to participate in the celebration. Our emcee will provide details and instructions on Pow-Wow protocol and we encourage you to ask questions.

The 2016 Student Pow-Wow was held on January 29, 2016.
