Algonquin College Wins Gold at Skills Canada National Competition

Learner Tom Hoy wins gold

Algonquin College is celebrating a national championship after learner Tom Hoy earned a Gold Medal in Network Systems Administration at the 2026 Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC), held May 28 and 29 at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.

Hoy represented Team Ontario at the national competition after capturing gold in IT Network Systems Administration at the 2026 Skills Ontario Competition earlier this spring. His national victory places him among the top skilled trade and technology competitors in Canada and highlights the exceptional talent being developed through Algonquin College’s hands-on, industry-focused learning environment.

“Tom’s achievement is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to his dedication, technical expertise and commitment to excellence,” said Julie Beauchamp, Senior Vice President, Academic at Algonquin College. “We are incredibly proud to see him represent both Algonquin College and Ontario on the national stage and return home with a gold medal. His success reflects the strength of our learners, faculty and industry-connected programs.”

National Physiotherapy Month

May is National Physiotherapy Month!
This month celebrates physical therapists, physical therapist assistants (PTAs), and students, while also raising awareness about the essential role movement and physical health play in injury recovery, fall prevention, and overall wellness.

At Algonquin College, we are proud to offer our Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA/PTA) program where learners are equipped with the knowledge and skills to work alongside an Occupational Therapist and/or Physiotherapist with the goal of helping individuals overcome movement limitations and perform their daily activities with independence.

Physiotherapist Assistants play vital supporting roles in the assessment, planning and implementation of therapeutic care across a variety of healthcare environments. The versatile set of skills, learned and applied throughout the program, are becoming increasingly valuable as the demand for both healthcare and rehabilitation services continue to grow.

To celebrate National Physiotherapy Month, we are highlighting students from our OTA/PTA program to share about their experience in the program, their clinical placement, and their advice for future students.
Meet Jaylynne, a student in the OTA/PTA program who is graduating this year.
