Hugh Wright calls it a career

After 29 years with Algonquin College, including 11 with the Corporate Training team, Hugh Wright is retiring.

Please join us in congratulating Hugh Wright, Associate Director of Corporate Training, on his retirement after 29 years with Algonquin College!

Our clients will best know Hugh as one of the driving forces behind the downtown Algonquin College Corporate Training Centre, which significantly grew the number of clients and individuals the Corporate Training team served annually. His leadership was also instrumental in setting the foundation for opening the new Algonquin College Learning Centre at 700 Sussex in January 2020.

Hugh expanded his role over the past year, working alongside our Perth Campus to spearhead the delivery of a Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities-funded Eastern Ontario College Consortium SkillsAdvance Ontario project. This initiative supports the workforce training and skills needs of Eastern Ontario’s steel and aluminum manufacturers and metal fabricators affected by recent trade disputes.

For nearly three decades, Hugh has lived and breathed the College’s mission, vision and values. His work ethic, caring nature and exceptional leadership skills have left a mark on all of us who have had the privilege to work alongside him. On behalf of all of us in Business Development, we wish to say thank you to Hugh and his family.

To celebrate his contributions, we have created a Hugh Wright Scholarship. This fund is a small token of our appreciation and a way to pay tribute to all that he has done for the College by paying it forward to those who matter most to him: our students.

Following Hugh’s retirement, I will be assuming Hugh’s day-to-day responsibilities on an interim basis.

Once again, please join me in celebrating Hugh and his phenomenal achievements in support of the College, our learners and our broader community.

Second round of free virtual courses back by popular demand from Algonquin College Corporate Training

OTTAWA (June 4, 2020) – Give your fingers a workout, top up your coffee and get your mind ready to learn again. Algonquin College Corporate Training (ACCT) has opened 1,150 additional spots for its free, instructor-led, virtual classroom courses to help give back to the community during COVID-19.

In addition, the ACCT team has added several new short courses and is offering a 25 per cent discount on its paid courses, which will also be delivered virtually.

“As a part of Ontario’s community college system, we are dedicated to helping our communities survive and thrive in both good times and in difficult moments such as these,” said Doug Wotherspoon, Executive Director of Business Development at Algonquin College. “We are proud to be able to expand our offerings in support of the businesses and people of Ontario who are looking to sharpen their skills at work or strengthen their resume for their next opportunity.”

On March 26, in response to COVID-19, ACCT announced several of its newly developed two, three, and four-day courses would be offered for free (fees for select books and exams still applied), so it could continue to help improve and develop the local workforce during an unprecedented time. Since then, 1,500 individuals have completed a free course.

As one student recently said of her project management learning, “Silas is an engaging and outstanding instructor, the material was very relevant and I felt that the course was of the highest calibre.” Another called her course “engaging and encouraging” and appreciated the active participation that is central to ACCT’s online learning approach.

This second round of courses includes 23 options and covers diverse topics such as business analysis, customer service, leadership, writing and communication, negotiation and specific software such as Microsoft Teams. Registration is limited to one course per individual, and the 1,150 spaces are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those interested in signing up for a free course should visit algonquincollege.com/corporate/courses/promotions.
