Introduction to Public Opinion Research is the first of its kind. It introduces participants to the skills and knowledge required to conduct public opinion research.

Public opinion research (POR) is an important communication instrument for governments and not-for-profit organizations. It plays a key role in assessing the effectiveness of their policies, programs and services. This course will explore the fundamentals of POR.

This course has been developed with Public Services and Procurement Canada and is taught by leading industry practitioners who are also teaching at Algonquin College.

What you’ll learn

Through applied exercises using questionnaire design and base analysis techniques, students develop a foundation in POR.

Topics include:

  • research design
  • qualitative and quantitative research
  • fundamental data analysis using Power BI
  • storytelling using POR results

Who should attend?

This course is well suited for professionals who want to:

  • understand the principles and best practices of POR
  • conduct a POR project

In order to successfully complete the course, participants must:

  • Attend 16 hours of virtual instructor-led training (one 4-hour session per week for 4 consecutive weeks)
  • Work on case studies (possibly in groups) and attend online group discussions

Prerequisites

  • Participants are advised to install the desktop version of Power BI
  • Participants must attend an introductory course on Power BI
    • Note: You will need to login to GCcollab and download the recording.
