Colonization Road Ontario: A Timeline
Colonization in Ontario is both a historic and ongoing process that educators and learners alike must understand before they can chart a path towards meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, lands and communities. Created as a tool for teachers to use in their online or in-person classrooms, Colonization Road Ontario: A Timeline highlights events related to colonization in Ontario from an Indigenous perspective, and also includes information relating to Indigenous models of governance, Indigenous knowledge, and acts of Indigenous resistance.
This timeline is inspired by the documentary Colonization Road directed by Michelle St. John (available to stream through the AC Library) which reveals how “colonization roads” led to the colonization of Indigenous territories and the displacement of First Nations people. Because colonization is an ongoing process, this timeline is also an ongoing project that will change over time.
