The Learning & Teaching Services International Training Strategy – Gabrielle Berube, International Teaching Specialist, Learning & Teaching Services and Wanqing Zhang, Instructional Designer, Learning & Teaching Services

Part of any internationalization effort in post-secondary institutions is a holistic approach to ensuring that students, faculty and staff adjust well to large influxes of international students. Learning and Teaching Services has developed a faculty training strategy in response to Algonquin’s record number of incoming international students. This strategy involves using department “experts” to work with LTS to develop a 5 part approach to better training faculty. This talk outlines the strategy and provides a forum for faculty to ask questions about the strategy and how they can get involved.

Home Sweet Homeroom – Jill Reeves, Professor, Police Foundations

Creating a homeroom course on Brightspace benefits faculty and students by offering a digital home for program information and opportunities. “PF Homeroom” allows program coordinators and academic advisors to serve students more efficiently and provides a systematic way to track student success. Easy to set up and less labour intensive than one might think, our Homeroom course is sweet and effective timesaver!

“More writing? Do you know how busy I am?” Finding the reasons and the time for writing in your classes – Cecelia Taylor, Professor, English

This presentation will a) outline reasons for assigning writing in your classes and b) present strategies for providing feedback you can manage. When we value writing as a thinking skill, asking students to do more writing across the curriculum makes sense. But what sensible professor wants to correct more? I don’t know any. I do know lots of professors who care deeply about what they teach. Yup, I’m talking to you. So here’s the point where we all connect: Students who write more in your classes are thinking through content that you care about. They are thinking, learning, and becoming better writers. Come play and find a way.

Creating & Delivering an Online Exam in Brightspace – Paul Boudreau, Professor, Project Management

This presentation shows one process to successfully set up and deliver an online exam in Brightspace. It includes the advantages of online exams, ways to avoid academic dishonesty, and solutions to problems that arise during the exam.

Personalized Learning – Kathlyn Bradshaw, Business Administration

Algonquin’s 2017-2022 Strategic Plan includes a vision to be a “global leader in personalized, digitally connected, experiential learning”:

The term personalized learning, or personalization, refers to a variety of educational programs, learning experiences, instructional approaches, and academic-support strategies that are intended to address the distinct learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual students [for the purpose of achieving exceptional learner, employer, and community success]. (Glossary of Educational Reform, 2015)

Participants in this workshop unpack this quote and consider personalized learning in relation to their own teaching and learning contexts.
