Support for Friends

Do you have a friend you are consistently worried about?

Here are some signs your friend may be struggling and a list of strategies that may provide some comfort or support.

Signs that your friend may be struggling:

  • Extreme emotional reactions to everyday situations
  • Anxiety, stress and worrying
  • Increased alcohol or drug use
  • Constant feeling of sadness or hopelessness
  • Harmful behaviors
  • Neglecting school or work obligations
  • Not answering texts
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Avoiding social activities

How can I help my friend?

When your friend is going through a difficult time, it’s not always easy to know how to help. Here are a few recommendations:

  • Make yourself available, in person or via technology
  • Listen to their story
  • Don’t judge
  • Encourage them – be a good influence
  • Help them find resources, support groups, counselling
  • Know that night time is often the hardest time for people in crisis – call in the evening to check in
  • Avoid promising to keep their concerns a secret. If your friend expresses something that might mean there is a safety risk, you should always contact someone else who can help.
  • Be there emotionally and physically: Bring food, lend a hand, make them laugh, spend quality time with them
  • Know when things get serious. If you believe your friend is in immediate danger, call 911.

Who else can help my friend?

If you do not feel comfortable helping your friend yourself, or you require support to do so, there are lots of staff available 24/7 that can help.

Don’t forget: If your friend requires urgent support, call 911.
