Cleanliness

Residents are responsible to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness of their space, shared or personal, in addition to demonstrating respect for the community through their habits and behaviors by avoiding improper hygiene and causing damages.

The general upkeep of the building is maintained through our in-house housekeeping and maintenance services.  We also inspect your suite prior to your move-in, and once per term, and upon your departure, to assess the condition of the space.

Each resident is responsible for the cleanliness of their suite.  It is expected that students perform the following basic expectations;

  • Clean-up after spills and food preparation
  • Clean dirty dishes and utensils
  • Regular wipe down of counters and surfaces
  • Regular sweeping and vacuuming of floors
  • Regularly take out garbage and recycling
  • Periodic cleaning inside the refrigerator and microwave

A word about housekeeping service

Once every three weeks, our housekeepers enter each suite to perform light custodial service to the kitchen and bathroom.  Housekeepers do not enter bedrooms.  The extent of the work is focused on surfaces and floors, as well as identifying any damages or concerns for safety.  Any concerns or required extraordinary cleaning will be reported the resident(s) for immediate action, and may be chargeable to the resident(s).

Damages

Residents are responsible for taking all actions associated with good citizenship, including reporting information about damages and vandalism, and those allegedly responsible for causing the damage.

The Resident may be held financially responsible for damage to any part of the Residence (interior/exterior common areas) if the resident, or guest of the Resident is found to be directly or indirectly involved in said damage.

Common areas include and are not limited to; the corridors, lounges, laundry rooms, stairwells, the exterior of Room doors, parking lots and any other public areas of the Residence. All charges for damages to common areas in residence that cannot be traced to those directly responsible will be split equally among the occupants of the building, wing, floor, or section of the residence deemed fair and appropriate by the Manager

To report damage or vandalism, please contact your RA, RLC, or Front Desk Representative.

Keys & Lockouts

To maintain a safe living environment, Residence corridors are secure and only residents can access hallways and the room they are assigned to.

Suite doors operate on card access, while bedroom doors and mailboxes operate on a hard key.  For your safety, the keys cannot be copied at a hardware store.

Should you lose or misplace your card or keys, please report to the Front Desk as soon as possible.  Please be mindful that lost cards and keys could put yourself and others at risk, so don’t delay in reporting.

Quiet Hours

Consideration Hours are in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Noise levels at any time should not detract from any resident’s ability to pursue academic endeavours or to enjoy a peaceful living environment. An individual’s right to reasonable quiet supersedes another’s right to make noise.

The following items are prohibited:

  • Large musical instruments (i.e. drum sets)
  • Surround sound systems
  • Noise producing devices (i.e. sub-woofers and PA Systems)

Quiet Hours

Quiet hours are observed in Residence:

  • Sunday to Thursday: 11:00pm – 08:00am
  • Friday and Saturday evenings: 01:00am-08:00am

Exam quiet hours begin 1 week prior to the exams start date. Quiet Hours are extended to 23 hours a day. Residence will define a Relaxed Hour during the evening when programming by Residence Staff may occur.

As a general rule, noise from your room/unit that is audible outside your room, including hallways, common areas, neighbouring units or buildings, will be addressed by Residence Staff during quiet hours.

Room Inspections

We inspect the rooms to practice preventative maintenance, and address any concerns for wellbeing and safety.

Room inspections occur prior to your arrival, once per term, and when you check-out of Residence.  You will be notified in advance when we intend to inspect your space while you are occupying it.

It is your responsibility to report any maintains issues, damages, or deficiencies.  To report a maintenance issue or deficiency, please do so by filling out a work order.

Move-in Inspection

We inspect all rooms prior to move-in day to ensure the final touches are complete for your arrival.  You will find a copy of your room inspection in your move-in envelope.  Please review it, and enter your comments as per the form.  Once complete, please submit the form to the Front Desk.  Should we not receive your form, you thereby waive your right to dispute our room inspection assessment.

In-room Inspection

Once per term, or more frequent if deemed necessary, Residence supervisory staff will conduct a room inspection.  You will be notified in advance of the inspection schedule.  Staff will assess all areas of the suite, including your bedroom.

Check-out Inspection

When a student has departed from Residence, a room inspection will be conducted.  A comparison will be conducted against the prior room inspection to determine any exceptions and/or additional concerns.

Any concerns for cleanliness, violations of community standards, safety, loss, damage or perceived wellbeing will be documented, and you will be contacted to meet with a member of the Residence supervisory team which may result in a sanction issued to the student(s).   Roommate conflicts are not viable excuses for the aforementioned concerns.

Consequences of a failed or unsatisfactory room inspection

Sanctions may be issued to address an unsatisfactory room inspection, including a monetary penalty and/or eviction.   Please note, “do-it-yourself” repair (DIY) is not an acceptable resolution for loss or damage to property, and could result in further charges on the basis of restitution.

Smoking in Residence

Algonquin College is a smoke-free campus, including all areas of the Residence.

There is zero tolerance for smoking inside Residence.

When it is suspected and/or evident that smoking has occurred in a unit, it is documented, and the student(s) will be required to meet with their RLC.  In addition to a behavioural sanction, the student(s) may be assessed a cleaning charge to restore the space.  Costs will vary depending on the extent of work, including third-party contractor labour costs, property replacement, and other associated cleaning and/or damage expenses.

The minimum penalty is $250 and could range to a maximum of $3000/ per unit.

If you need support to quit smoking, take a look at this page.
