AI-Empowered Educator Program (Winter 2027)

The Learning and Teaching Services (LTS) team is launching a new faculty development initiative this Winter called the AI-Empowered Educator Program.

This new program is designed to support innovation and experimentation by inviting full-time faculty to explore the integration of AI within their teaching practice. This exploration will take place across two streams. Faculty are welcome to review each stream with their Chair and submit an expression of interest.

Stream 1 – AI Technology Stream (3hrs/week on SWF)

The AI Technology stream invites participants to pilot a new AI technology of their choosing by grounding this exploration within an existing teaching challenge. Faculty will be invited to:

  • Identify a teaching challenge;
  • Engage in a structured pilot with LTS using a paid subscription (provided by LTS) to evaluate the pedagogical value of the tool;
  • Share their experiences with peers as part of a structured dissemination plan to identify next steps in this exploration.

Faculty may also select this stream if they wish to undertake a focused exploration of the following college tools:

  • Lumi Tutor – an AI student assistant that is integrated seamlessly into Brightspace to support the learning environment. Faculty are invited to explore how this tool could support their students. Learn move via D2L Lumi Chat
  • M365 Co-Pilot with Anthropic – an elevated license of Co-Pilot which now features Anthropic (i.e., Claude) Large Language Models.

Faculty will be required to submit an expression of interest by identifying both teaching challenge and the proposed tool. so that the suggested technology adheres to college policies and Teaching with AI Guidelines.

Stream 2 – AI Curriculum Integration and Assessment Design (3hrs/week on SWF)

The AI Curriculum Integration and Assessment Design stream will invite participants to explore and integrate specific “Curriculum Resource Packages (CRP)” into their courses. These resources are made available through Algonquin College’s new partnership with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) and were created by Canadian educators across multiple higher ed institutions.

Each CRP includes vocationally aligned readings, learning activities, and case studies that can be integrated within specific courses to enhance the curriculum and/or assessments.

Vocationally Aligned CRPs for Winter 2027

  • AI in Financial Investment and Accounting
  • AI in Technical Communication
  • AI Tools for Computational Biology
  • AI in Early Childhood Education
  • AI in Nursing and Healthcare Practices

In Development with AMII for Spring 2027

  • AI in Accounting
  • AI Literacy in Academic Research
  • AI for Analysis in Journalism
  • AI in Logistics, Transportation, and Supply Chain Management
  • AI in Cybersecurity

Faculty interested in piloting these new resources will be (or multiple), share the resources with students, create new activities, and seek feedback from students to share with the larger college community.
