Professor of the 21st Century Framework (levelled)

Developing one’s teaching skills and abilities is a life-long process. The levelled version of the Professor of the 21st Century has been developed in an effort to support faculty with concrete examples for each competency and appropriate for each phase of a teaching career:

1. New professor’s probationary period (0-2 years)
2. Professor with two to seven years of experience
3. Established professor with over seven years of teaching experience

Professor of the 21st Century Self-Assessment Check Lists

The Self-Assessment Checklists are designed to assist Algonquin College faculty in identifying individual teaching strengths and needs with respect to the competencies identified in the Professor of the 21st Century Framework. The self-assessment exercise is intended to serve as the basis of a personal professional development (PD) plan.

Background

The Professor of the 21st Century competencies and critical elements were developed through detailed discussions among academic leaders from across the College. A final document received approval by the College Academic Council, The Academic Services Management Committee, and the President’s Executive Committee.

In 2004, an expanded version of the Professor of the 21st Century was levelled to illustrate three stages of continuous professional development:

  1. Recruitment of New Full-time Faculty (Stage One)
  2. End of Probation (Stage Two)
  3. Established Professor (Stage Three)

Activities at each level reflect what faculty will be expected to demonstrate during the three main stages of professional development at Algonquin.
