The Photonics Program at Algonquin College has provided me with the knowledge base and hands on training required to successfully find a job in the real world. In the College you experience small class sizes, which gives you a lot more opportunity for additional help and training. Through my time at Algonquin College, I was also given a great life experience, through the co-op program, and spent the summer at a high tech optics company called ELCAN. I was able to use key concepts there that I learned in class, and apply them to real world applications. I am now currently working full time at a local company, LightMachinery, in my field of study.

The Photonics specialization program was an excellent choice for me. The combination of theory and hands-on training had prepared me very well to participate in the field of optical communications. During my four year journey in this program, I have been able to learn about the science and engineering behind light propagation and emission, and how it’s being utilized in different fields.
The travel and transformation of light using optical components was one of the topics I enjoyed the most in this program. With the help of the college and program staff, I have been able to find a co-op placement at Iridian Spectral Technologies where I had the opportunity to work in the manufacturing of optical coating and thin film as well as to work on research project and complete my thesis. After graduation, I landed at Juniper Networks (formerly BTI Systems) that provides long haul and packet-optical solutions globally for internet service providers. I am a part of the global support and services team, and work on 10/100 Gbps optical fiber communication systems, which involve different types of optical transport and switching modules such as ROADM, muxponder, amplifier and Layer 2 switches.
