Algonquin College Wins CICan ImpAct-Climate Challenge

Ottawa, ON, December 18, 2023 — Claude Brulé, Algonquin President and CEO, is pleased to share that Algonquin College has won the CICan’s ImpAct-Climate Challenge, with the highest number of submissions in the large institution category.

The project received over 2,100 entries from staff, students, and faculty across the country, from more than 46 colleges and institutes.

Institutional winners in each size category receive a bursary worth $3,000 for a student climate leader on their campus, and a custom recognition plaque. Continue reading

Algonquin College partners with CityStudio Ottawa, joining University of Ottawa, City of Ottawa

OTTAWA (Nov. 21, 2023) – Algonquin College has entered into a partnership contract with CityStudio Ottawa, a globally-recognized framework for students to collaborate on civic engagement through experiential learning with faculty, city administration and community partners. Through its community relationships, CityStudio Ottawa provides a framework for knowledge exchange as students cross-collaborate on real-world projects that have a direct impact on the health and wellbeing of residents within the Ottawa region.

“By joining CityStudio Ottawa, Algonquin College is demonstrating our commitment to experiential learning with an emerging research focus on community engaged learning,” said Kristine Dawson, Associate Vice President, Experiential Learning and Innovation. “The CityStudio partnership is the first step in advancing our strategic vision for increased applied research focused on community-based research. This exciting partnership will provide new opportunities for our students and faculty to support city building activities that advance our community in a positive way.”

Algonquin College announces reappointment of Claude Brulé as President and CEO

OTTAWA (Oct. 24, 2023) – Algonquin College Board of Governors Chair, James McCracken is pleased to announce the reappointment of Claude Brulé as President and CEO for an additional term of office of up to five years. The decision, made after careful consideration and evaluation by the Board of Governors.

President Brulé has demonstrated exemplary leadership, dedication and a strong commitment to the mission and values of the College throughout his tenure. Algonquin College’s new Building Conservation degree program will develop the tradespeople of tomorrow while fighting climate change

Registration is now open for Algonquin College’s new Bachelor of Applied Science (Building Conservation) degree program, which will be offered exclusively at the College’s Heritage Institute in Perth, Ont.

This program, unique in Canada, is designed to prepare students for a career in heritage conservation and the revitalization of the built environment to sustain our future, fight climate change and be good stewards of our physical heritage. The need for sustainability-focused conservationists is growing by the day as a result of Canada’s aging infrastructure, and this program will serve as a launching pad for talented new conservationists to begin making a difference.

Medical Radiation Technology student wins $5,000 in free tuition at Algonquin College

OTTAWA (Sep. 20, 2023) – A first-year student in the Medical Radiation Technology program is the 2023-24 winner of the annual Tuition Contest at Algonquin College. Jenna Mattatall had arrived in Ottawa one day prior to learning about her contest win, after driving 13 hours from her hometown of Truro, N.S.

College employees from the the School of Health Studies, Student Support Services and the Marketing department surprised Mattatall with news of her win in the AC Hub on the Ottawa Campus, waiving pompoms and cheering. The Algonquin College mascot was on hand to welcome Mattatall, along with Erin Stitt-Cavanagh, Dean, School of Health Studies and Paula Benbow, Chair, Allied Health, presenting a cheque in the amount of $5,000. The full amount will be applied to Mattatall’s tuition expenses for the 2023-24 academic year.

Algonquin College and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute form collaborative partnership

OTTAWA (Sep. 18, 2023) – Algonquin College and the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) signed a letter of intent today during a virtual signing held in Ottawa and Nassau, respectively. This five-year partnership will strengthen cooperation while providing international educational opportunities to enhance both institutions and their students through future collaborations.

Emerging out of a Bahamas Government Mission to Canada led by Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable I. Chester Cooper and former Minister of State for Education, the Honourable Zane Lightbourne, the collaboration will relate to reciprocal areas of interest, which contribute to the development of the cooperative relationship.

“The agreement signed today between Algonquin College and BTVI will offer expanded opportunities for our learners, faculty and employees to collaborate with internationally recognized applied training institutions,” said Claude Brulé, Algonquin College President and CEO. “We look forward to building on our shared knowledge to further innovation and education capabilities between our two institutions.”

Algonquin College to honour accomplished graduates at annual Alumni of Distinction Awards celebration

OTTAWA (Sept. 5, 2023) – Algonquin College will celebrate the achievements of 10 graduates and one alumni employer at the seventh annual Alumni of Distinction Awards in the College’s Algonquin Commons Theatre on Nov. 2.

Honourees include the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian arm of a global iconic brand, a leader in the automotive industry, an internationally acclaimed digital artist and a master chef who has worked in multiple Michelin-Star restaurants worldwide.

Also being recognized is a passionate champion for youth, a tireless advocate for the less fortunate, a leader in the local fight against food insecurity and a caring bedside nurse who is now an executive vice-president of the city’s largest hospital.

And lastly to be acclaimed are an IT specialist who was at the forefront of introducing the Internet to his native country of Barbados and an ardent supporter of public justice for the Cree Nation in her home province of Quebec.

“Algonquin College transforms the hopes and dreams of its learners into lifelong success,” said Mark Savenkoff, Algonquin College’s Vice President, Advancement and Strategy. “Our alumni of distinction honourees have all shown that you can reach new heights and lift up others along the way.”

In addition to the individual honourees, this year’s Alumni Employer of the Year is a local tech giant that has hired scores of Algonquin College graduates and has contributed to the College’s cooperative education program in significant ways.

The 2023 Algonquin College Alumni of Distinction are:

Alumna of the Year: Michèle Boudria – President and Chief Executive Officer, McDonald’s Restaurants of Canada (Journalism – Class of 1988)

Employer of the Year: Nokia Canada

Apprenticeship Award: Imrun Texeira – Chef and Owner, Wanderlust (Cook Apprentice – Class of 2014)

Business Award: James Hallett – Former Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board at KAR Global; current Chairman and CEO at Hallett Sports and Entertainment; and member of the Board of Directors for OPENLANE (NYSE:KAR) (Recreation Management – Class of 1975)

Changing Lives Award: Adam Joiner – CEO, BGC Ottawa (formerly the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa) – (Social Service Worker – Class of 2003)

Community Services Award: Rachael Wilson – CEO, Ottawa Food Bank (Small Business Management – Class of 2000)

Creative Arts & Design Award: Eric Chan (a.k.a. EEPMON) – Digital Artist and Founder of EEPMON Creative Studio (Computer Engineering Technology – Computing Science – Class of 2003, and Bachelor of Information Technology – Interactive Multimedia and Design – Class of 2008)

Health Sciences Award: Suzanne Madore – Executive Vice-President, Chief Clinical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, the Ottawa Hospital (Nursing – Class of 1990)

Brian Fraser Recent Graduate Award: Alycia Lameboy-Dixon – Justice Projects Officer, under the Department of Justice and Correctional Services at the Cree Nation Government (Law Clerk – Class of 2019)

Rena Bowen Volunteer of the Year Award: Nathalie Maione– Directrice Générale, Action Logement and President/Co-Founder of Helping with Furniture (Early Childhood Education – Class of 1983)

Technology Award: Niel Harper – Board Director & Chair, Innovation & Technology Committee – ISACA (Business Information Systems – Class of 1995)

College facilities are open should learners and employees require workspaces during regular business hours on June 27.
