This page lists current and recent ITS alerts and outages.

ITS infrastructure Outages and alerts are also emailed to affected parties, and may be posted to the ITS Twitter account. For the notification methods used for outages, go to About the ITS website.

Caution!  ITS alerts email will always come from ITS, have ITS header and footer images, and follow the same format. If you are suspicious of an email you receive, please contact extension 5555. For more steps you can take to be secure, see the Algonquin College Information Security website.

Staff Printing System Update

ITS will be updatingthe PaperCut printing system on Sunday, March 12, 2017 from 7:00am until 12:00pm.
As part of this update,
  • AC Cash will be unavailable from 7:00am – 10:00am and
  • printing for Algonquin College employees will be unavailable from 7:00am – 12:00pm.

Note: Meal plan payments will still be accepted.

Scheduled Maintenance for GeneSIS, ACSIS

  • ACSIS – Friday, January 27, 2017 at 5:00 PM until Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 3:00 AM

IT Network Hardware and Firewall Maintenance over the holidays

Internet service outage affecting phones, Blackboard at AC Pembroke.

An Internet outage is affecting a number of information systems on the Pembroke Campus, including telephony service and Blackboard.

ITS is working to determine believe the cause, and will update the AC Pembroke community as soon as there is more information. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Update to GeneSIS, ACSIS, and HR/Pay/BUS

When: Sunday, December 18, 2016 from 7:00am – 8:00am

ITS will be performing a necessary update to the GeneSIS, ACSIS, and HR/Pay/BUS systems on Sunday, December 18, 2016 between 7:00am and 8:00am. GeneSIS, ACSIS, and HR/Pay/BUS will be unavailable during this time.

This update is a preventative measure step to ensure the stability during peak Grade Entry period.

Once the change has been completed, the system will be closely monitored.

Blackboard is experiencing an issue with logging in

Please be advised that the AC Blackboard system is experiencing a service degradation which is affecting users from logging in.

Information Technology Services is aware of the issue and working to restore the service as soon as possible.

We will send an update by 3:00pm or when Blackboard is restored.

Update: Oct.38 2:45pm

Please be advised that some users were unable to log in to the college Blackboard service on Friday afternoon because of an unplanned outage. This issue was rectified by about 2:45 p.m.

We do continue to work with the vendor to repair the Blackboard notifications area that has not worked for several weeks. The announcements, course updates and grades that normally appear in the notifications area, can, however, still be found on Blackboard.

To see the latest course updates and announcements, users must click on the Notifications Dashboard located just below the Home button. In addition, to see their grades, students must look at each course separately, choosing the course, then Student Tools, then My Grades.

Planned Blackboard outage scheduled for October 21st at 10 pm

When: Saturday October 22nd  starting at 10:00 PM until 4:00 AM

In order to install the latest patch provided to us from our vendor, ITS will be temporarily shutting down access to Blackboard for 6 hours starting at 10 pm on Saturday. This patch will address a number of issues that we have been experiencing with Blackboard notifications (updates and My grades).

We apologize for any inconvenience this scheduled outage may cause and thank you for your patience and understanding.

Update #3: Sun.Oct.23:

Further to this morning’s announcement regarding Blackboard courses not displaying using the course tab, please note that you are now able to access course information using the drop-down global navigation tool. To do so, simply click on the “Global Navigation Menu” on the right hand side at the top, just beside your name.

We continue to investigate further, and need to take down the Blackboard system, this Sunday evening at 10:00 pm, for one hour to restore the system database. During that time, Blackboard will be inaccessible.

We recommend that you use Blackboard in read-only mode for the remainder of today (Sunday), and delay any submissions until Monday morning, October 24.

Update #4: Mon.Oct.24:

Further to the weekend announcements regarding Blackboard, we have escalated the issue with our vendor and have taken the necessary steps to restore service. The installation of the patch has been successful.

However one outstanding item remains, course availability. While some students are able to see their course information others are not.  To resolve this issue we are completing a restore of the system that allows students access to their courses.

We will send another notice out in one hour with an update or once the issue is resolved.

Final Update: Tues.Oct.25

As of Monday October 25th at 5 p.m. Blackboard continues to function normally following the system update over the weekend.  This means that all students and Faculty have full access to Blackboard, including course content, systems announcements, grades (via Course>Student Tools>My grades) and Blackboard Collaborate.

There is no change to the appearance of Blackboard or the way its features are accessed.

ITS continues to monitor the functioning of Blackboard.

Maintenance will be performed on Blackboard systems Oct.3 and Oct.4

Over the weekend ITS installed additional components to Blackboard to increase the system’s performance.  We were successful and system performance has increased. We continue to monitor the Blackboard environment.

ITS will continue these upgrades and maintenance tonight (October 3rd from 11:59pm to 2:00am) and tomorrow night (October 4th from 11:59pm to 2:00am). During these times, Blackboard will be unavailable.

Blackboard is experiencing a service degradation

Please be advised that the Algonquin College Blackboard system is experiencing a degradation affecting performance.
Blackboard is still available but is slower than normal. ITS is aware of the issue and is working to fix the problem.
And update on this issue will be communicated by end of day or when fixed.

Algonquin College Power Shutdown

Where: Ottawa campuses, except ACCE building

When: Saturday August 13 from 11:00pm to 8:00am August 14

There will be a campus wide power shutdown starting at 11:00pm on Saturday August 13 and lasting until 8:00am on Sunday August 14. Another notice will be sent out 48 hours before the shutdown.

Please note that this shutdown will affect the entire Ottawa campus except the ACCE Building.

Remember to power down all your electronics on Friday before you leave.

Wireless Certificate Upgrade

Where: Woodroffe Campus

When: Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 1:00am

Please be advised that ITS will be updating the wireless certificate required to log into the AC wireless network on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 1:00am.

While this will not cause an interruption to the wireless network, you will be prompted to accept the new certificate for the AC wireless connection once the update has been completed. Some devices may also need to re-configure the wireless connection. To re-create the AC wireless profile, please follow the steps outlined in our Knowledge Base.

New Email Rule for college email accounts

When: Thursday, March 24, 2016

Please be advised that a filtering rule has been set on the anti-spam/anti-malware gateway servers to reject JavaScript attachments added to email messages. This change was based on a vendor recommendation in order to help mitigate potential malware contained in files with a .js file extension. Once the rule has been set, email attachments that contain the file extension will be removed from the original email.

Remember … Think before you click!

The College has implemented numerous controls to limit dangerous phishing e-mails from reaching you, however given the volume of e-mail that is transmitted every day, it is impossible to eliminate all instances.

Therefore, you are reminded to:

  1. Be vigilant!  – if you do not know the sender, or the if message you received is obviously spam, sent from outside Algonquin’s e-mail system, then simply  and permanently delete your copy by selecting the message and holding Shift+Delete to delete it.
  2. Forward suspect e-mails it to this special e-mail account:  spamorscam@algonquincollege.com, for further analysis. Then permanently delete your copy by selecting the message and holding Shift+Delete. Don’t forward it to others.

All e-mails from ITS will have the signature block below to help you differentiate between legitimate IT e-mails and those suspected as phishing attacks.

The Algonquin username and password authentication implementation is now complete.

GeneSIS, GeneSIS.Net, and HR/Pay/Bus users will now login to these systems with their Algonquin user name and password.

Network Switch Evergreening on Woodroffe campus

B Building 3rd floor network and telephone upgrade

Effective immediately, the network wiring in the 3rd floor B building telecom closet is being upgraded. This work will be ongoing until mid-August.

The affected rooms include classes and offices from B334 to B374, plus B320. For a better view of the affected rooms, see the PDF map BLDG B Cabling.

The affected rooms will have no wired network or telephone access. Wireless network access for these rooms will be intermittent during this time.

Scheduled maintenance of College Telephony Services

When: Saturday, March 7, 2015 – 9:00am to 5:00pm
Please be advised that all Algonquin College telephony services, for ALL campuses (Woodroffe, Perth, Pembroke), will be intermittently unavailable on March 7 2015 from 9:00am to 5:00pm (8hr duration) due to a complete system upgrade that is occurring over the weekend. During this time, ALL college telephony services including: incoming calls and outgoing calls to all college extensions and main Algonquin College phone numbers, voicemail, and 9-1-1 services dialed via a college phone device will be intermittently unavailable.
Once the upgrade is complete, there will be no change to how users use the phone system. ALL saved or new voicemail (not in email) will be deleted through the upgrade process.  Please ensure you listen to any voicemail saved on your phone prior to 9:00AM March 7 2015.
